It’s difficult to know which is more surprising- the fact that Lee Hendrie had only an 18 minute international career or that he appeared on a night when Aston Villa provided more players for the England team than Manchester United.
While Hendrie remains a more than useful Premiership player he remains too much the traditional inside-forward type; his England chances have been diminished by the emergence of all-purpose box-to-box talents like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, his former team-mates in the Under-21 team, who both have excellent technical skills allied to stamina and physical presence.
Hendrie made his England bow nearly a year before Lampard and over 18 months before Gerrard yet he appears to have no chance of rejoining the England set-up, even when he had a stellar first half of the current season.
