As part of its overall commitment to valuing diversity, in academic year 1999/2000 Leeds Metropolitan University surveyed women in a number of roles to find their views on work/life balance, training and development and career progression.
Among the issues which emerged were that both men and women found it difficult to progress from manual roles into other positions owing to lack of appropriate experience and IT skills, and that women in administrative roles found it hard to advance because of lack of progression opportunities.
Low staff turnover and relationships with unions further complicated the issues, while the university was eager to make headway on its aim of increasing the numbers of women in management positions.
