Parliamentary Powers to permit a Supertram project to proceed in Leeds were granted to METRO in conjunction with Leeds City Council during July 1993.
It was for a route to Tingley from Cookridge Street in Leeds City centre and included a branch from Hunslet to Stourton.
The Council's determination to continue pressing for Supertram was recently displayed by a unanimous vote to apply to renew its Parliamentary Powers after July 1998 when they ceased to be valid.

As you will be aware, plans for the Leeds Supertram are in disarray, following the escalation in its costs and the Government's refusal at present to make an additional major contribution to its costs.
The Trust's one major worry about Supertram had been that the attractiveness and character of the city would be greatly damaged if a cheap and utilitarian tram system was built.
It is time the Government provided Leeds with the necessary capital support for this vital project, and stopped undermining the future prospects of Leeds by its prevarication.
