The Grenville County Historical Society was reorganized in 1959, largely through the efforts of the late Phyllis Stephenson and of Jean Wadds, at that time Jean Casselman, MP for Grenville-Carleton, with the first official meeting taking place at St. Mark's School in Prescott on Dec. 1, 1959, with Edward McNally sworn in as president.
Long before Grenville County was given this name, approximately 500 years ago, it was occupied by a native population.
From 1850 until the 1990's Grenville County was composed of five townships: Wolford, Oxford-on-Rideau, and South Gower in the north, Augusta and Edwardsburg in the south.

The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville received $195,932 from the MOE for its PWPF study, or roughly 79 percent of the total cost of the study ($246,921).
Major study activities included the following: identification of groundwater recharge and discharge areas; mapping of aquifers vulnerable to contamination; modeling groundwater flow; developing preliminary wellhead protection areas for two urban areas (the former Hamlet of Lansdowne and the Village of Westport); inventorying contaminant sources; inventorying groundwater usage; and reviewing institutional arrangements for groundwater management.
