 Selmer: The Pim Fortuyn assassination
Leefbaar Nederland was a new political party inspired by local "livable parties" being succesful.
In February, while Leefbaar Nederland was already getting lots of votes in the polls (15 out of a possible 150 seats in parliament were predicted), Pim Fortuyn gave an unfortunate interview in "de Volkskrant", a Dutch newspaper.
For the people who are wondering what happened with Leefbaar Nederland, the party continued but as soon as they fired Pim Fortuyn, the polls showed a great decline, the last polls showed they'd get between 3 and 5 seats.

Also the idea for a national Leefbaar party came up and on 7/3/99 was a fact, but it wasn't until 10/6/01 that the founders started to think of a program and not before 25/11/01 before a list of candidates was selected.
With Fortuyn in their ranks Leefbaar Nederland was rising in the polls like a rocket, even upto levels making the other politicians very nervous.
But then there was a major collision with Leefbaar Nederland when Fortuyn grew in his populism and started to ignore the party's program for his own popularity.

Telegraph | News | Pim Fortuyn
PIM FORTUYN, who has been murdered at Hilversum aged 54, was a flamboyant, shaven-headed, gay, former Marxist professor of sociology who attracted considerable support in his home country for a political programme which rejected multi-culturalism, socialism, and Muslim immigration.
Recent polls suggested that his Leefbaar ("Liveable") Rotterdam movement, which took 17 of 45 seats in the city's elections in March, might gain around 20 per cent of the vote in national elections on May 15.
In a nation where debate is generally conducted by consensus among bland Centre-Left liberals, Fortuyn - once voted the best-dressed man in Holland by Esquire magazine - adopted a deliberately controversial, mincing stance.
