The Leelanau Peninsula is a peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan that extends about 30 miles from the Lower Peninsula of Michigan into Lake Michigan.
Leelanau State Park and the Grand Traverse Light are located at the northern tip.
Lake Leelanau is run 13 miles through the middle of the peninsula and covers 8,700 acres.

ATF has received a petition to establish a viticultural area in the State of Michigan to be known as "Leelanau Peninsula." The proposed area is located in the northwestern portion of the state's lower peninsula and consists of the mainland portion of Leelanau County, excluding the offshore islands.
On the western side of the peninsula is Lake Michigan, on the eastern side is the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay and the southern boundary is the Leelanau-Grand Traverse county line.
The Leelanau Peninsula viticultural area encompasses all of Leelanau County, Michigan, excluding the offshore islands.

The Leelanau Conservancy is slated to receive the second-largest grant it has ever received — some $632,000 from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund — to purchase a 42-acre property that includes 640 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula.
“This is a wonderful Christmas present for Leelanau citizens, and for the thousands of people who visit the tip of the peninsula and the Leelanau State Park each year,” said Brian Price, executive director of the Leelanau Conservancy.
The tip of the peninsula is one of the premier migration routes for songbirds and raptors in North America, according to Kay Charter of Omena who founded the organization “Saving Birds Through Habitat.” Charter has led hikes at the Lighthouse West property to educate others and help fundraise for its purchase.

Leelanau County will host the biggest bicycle road race in the state on Sept. 17 with the inaugural Tour de Leelanau.
It is sanctioned by USA Cycling and is being held under permit by the United State Cycling Federation, the group which oversees all of the major bicycling races in the nation.
Also that weekend is the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association Harvest Stompede, which occurs both Saturday and Sunday.

That was the conclusion of a legal expert who spoke Monday at a conference sponsored by the Michigan Association of School Boards.
