		Leerdam (population: 21,050 in 2004) is a town in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland.
		The municipality of Leerdam comprises the town of Leerdam, the rural villages Kedichem and Schoonrewoerd and the hamlet of Oosterwijk.
		Leerdam received city rights in 1407.The small river Linge, bordered by beautiful water meadows, defines the atmosphere and tone of the landscape.

		Castle Leerdam was built on the confluence of two small rivers; the Linge and the Leede, probably somewhere in the 11th or 12th century.
		In 1557 William of Orange inherited the County of Leerdam together with the castle.

		At the time there was an important idealistic movement to improve the quality of everyday design, led by architects and furniture makers: shapes inspired by nature were stylised, geometrical designs introduced and the role of ornament was reduced.
		Quite a lot of unsigned Leerdam glass has been exported to the USA and Canada where it is often mistaken for Steuben.
		The hand blown tableware and flower vases are very light and elegant, often executed in light tones (grey, light amethyst) to accent the all important shape of the vessel in the absence of other decoration.

	Leerdam Glass
		Leerdam, near Rotterdam in the Netherlands, has been a site of glass making since the 18th Century.
		The most prolific designer who worked for Leerdam was Andries Copier who was born in Leerdam in 1901 and lived to the age of 90.
		Leerdam vases designed by Andries Copier won first prize at the 1925 Paris Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts.

		Leerdam is often included in the area called "Drechtsteden", semi-urban centres around Rotterdam whose name usually ends on "Drecht" (old Dutch for waterway, of which there are plenty in this waterlogged country) but as it resembles Geldermalsen more, that's the town I've grouped it with.
		A pity, because Leerdam itself (the "new" parts excepted) is quite agreeable, and surrounded by a rural area of the picturesque kind, vaguely reminiscent of French vineyards.
		This road pops over the hill at the end and into the countryside part of Leerdam, where the housing is more opulent and the view reminds of Arkel.
