Left-bank Ukraine initially enjoyed a degree of autonomy within Muscovy (from 1721, imperial Russia) as the Cossack Hetmanate, which was gradually eliminated through the 18th century.
From the Treaty of Pereyaslav of 1654, this area of Ukraine was under Muscovite control, later reaffirmed in the Treaty of Andrusiv ( 1667) and the Eternal Peace Treaty ( 1686) between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Muscovy.

The Hetmanate was a semiautonomous Cossack suzerainty in Left-bank Ukraine, owing fealty to the tsar of Muscovy.
It was established as a result of the Treaty of Pereyaslav ( Pereyaslavs'ka Rada) in 1654, and its boundaries set following the Treaty of Andrusovo ( Andrusiv) of 1667, which gave Right-bank Ukraine to Poland and retained Left-bank Ukraine for Russia (at the time Muscovy).
