It was a prediction that by the Summer of 1996 had literally come true: during a gig on the 'Leftism' tour at London's Brixton Academy, sound levels reached the highest ever recorded at the venue, while the bass vibrations caused the ceiling to start disintegrating, showering dust and plaster onto the stage.
Leftfield have spent three years struggling to invent new cathedrals of sound, racked by the fear that they could never do anything as good as 'Leftism' again.
Leftfield knew there was an electro revival coming last year, but typically, weren't too fussed about getting on board.

Leftfield "Leftism" is certainly one the finest dance albums ever made and will most certainly go down as a classic album.
When this album was released, it was at a time in the 90's when dance/electronic music was starting to decay, but Leftfield found something left in the genre and they took it to new levels.

The slow gestation period of Leftism was filled by Hard Hands' championing of the emerging junglist scene and taster singles like "Song of Life" and "Open Up," which raised expectations to a simmer.
Leftism distilled the revolutionary sounds of the early '90s into timeless songs, and even as the second Leftfield album approaches, the debut sounds fresher than 1999's flavor-of-the-month junglists and big beaters.

Whereas that first album bounced around, exploring styles and genres (and doing an extremely good job of it, mind you), RHYTHM AND STEALTH is an exceptionally focused record--though it incorporates ambient, techno, and electronica styles, among others, each track seems to part of something larger.
One standout among many is "Afrika Shox," featuring the legendary Afrika Bombaataa on vocals, which looses massive beats, a dense collection of samples, and some super-fast scratching to create a truly stunning dance track.

Paul Daley (a former member of A Man Called Adam and the Brand New Heavies) and programmer Neil Barnes combined the classic soul of early Chicago and New York house with the growing Artificial Intelligence school of album-oriented techno to create classic, intelligent dance music.
When legal hassles over ownership of the Leftfield name prevented the pair from recording their own music after the release of their debut "Not Forgotten," they turned to remixing, establishing their early reputation for reworking tracks by artists ranging from Stereo MC's and David Bowie to Yothu Yindhi and Renegade Soundwave.
With only two albums under their belt, Leftfield decided to split in early 2002 to focus on solo projects.

Perhaps wishing to move from progressive-house flagwavers to trip-hop super-producers on a par with Massive Attack, Leftfield returned after almost five years of silence with a set of blunted trip-hop jams, stoned to say the least -- though glimmers of their house background do show through.
The one track that might make fans yearn for the heady days of 1993, "El Cid," begins with the ephemeral synth for which Leftfield has been known, but soon moves into breakbeat territory.
As Rhythm and Stealth shows time and time again, it's definitely not 1993 anymore, and Leftfield has moved on with a grace and mastery of production seldom seen in the dance world.

It's been four years since Leftfield made the leap from the 12-inch import bin to the CD racks at your local Best Buy with their full-length debut, "Leftism." Hailed by many in the duo's native England as the best dance album ever, it can't help but suffer in the glare of its own legend.
But from the electronic skank of opener "Release the Pressure" to the rippling pulse that closes the album with a sense that the beat goes on, "Leftism" is a rewarding listen through and through.
Half a decade later "Rhythm and Stealth" offered us a more contemplative, less joyous Leftfield.
