Gomez average almost 20 innings more per year than Guidry per in similar lapses of time (240 between 1931-1939 vs 220 between 1977-1985), probably the main cause to be done with only 34 years old.
As contemporary with Lefty Grove,who was the dominating pitcher of the AL in the early 30's.
Gomez was pitching in an era of tremendous offensive output.

At 6-foot-2, Gomez weighed only 173 pounds, but his long arms gave him the leverage to throw a very good fastball, and early in his major league career he developed an excellent slow curve that drove hitters crazy.
Gomez went 24-7 in 1932 and won the second game of the World Series 7-2 as the Yankees swept the Cubs in four games.
Gomez was only 6-4 in 1942 and retired after losing his only start with the Washington Senators the following year.

The Lefty Gomez Award was established by the ABCA and Wilson Sporting Goods in 1962 as a tribute to the Hall of Fame pitcher, Vernon Louis Gomez, who became involved with college baseball after retiring from professional competition in 1943.
While Gomez had a successful career in the major leagues, it was his contribution to college baseball and the ABCA that set him apart from other great baseball players.
