Leg before wicket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Despite the word leg in leg before wicket, the rule applies if the ball hits the batsman on any part of his body, except for the glove of a hand in contact with the bat (which is considered part of the bat).
Lbw (N) lbw (N) was a term used to describe an alteration in the law of leg before wicket that was made by MCC on November 21, 1934.
The term "lbw (N)" referred to the fact that from 1935 to 1937, wickets under the new leg before wicket rule were distinguished in scoredcards published by Wisden from those under the pre-1935 rule.

Leg spin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A leg spin bowler attempts to flick the ball with his wrist in the act of delivery so as to cause the ball to spin anti-clockwise.
Good leg spin bowlers are also able to bowl deliveries that behave unexpectedly, including the googly, which turns the opposite way to a normal leg break, and the topspinner, which doesn't deviate significantly.
A few exceptional leg spinners (notably Shane Warne) also mastered the flipper, a delivery that like a topspinner goes straight on landing but travels quickly and barely bounces on landing, often dismissing batsmen leg before wicket or bowled.

The lbw rule is designed to prevent a batsman protecting his wicket against being bowled with his body, rather than his bat (Nocturnal mouselike mammal with forelimbs modified to form membranous wings and anatomical adaptations for echolocation by which they navigate).
The lbw rule is always adjudged by the umpire at the bowler's end.
However, as of now, lbw remains one of the few decisions that fall solely under the purview of the on-field umpire.

Station Information - Leg before wicket
In cricket, leg before wicket (lbw) is the dismissal of a batsman when the ball hits the player's leg pads when it would have continued to hit the stumps.
Interestingly, although it is called "leg" before wicket, practically, it applies to any part of the body except the gloves holding the bat.
The ball must also have been pitched in line with the stumps or on the off-side for the umpire to give the batsman 'out'; furthermore, if the batsman is hit outside the line of the off-stump, he cannot be given out if he is attempting to hit the ball.

Jamaica Gleaner - Leg before wicket and the third umpire - Tuesday | September 17, 2002
For the first time in the history of the game, the third umpire is being used for leg before wicket decisions and apart from West Indians who are still talking about Mervyn Dillon's wayward over, that is what the fans have been focusing on.
The questions are: did the ball pitch outside the leg stump, did it touch the bat, and if after looking at the television replays the third umpire rules that the ball did pitch outside the leg stump or it did touch the bat, the standing umpire rules not out.
It is the umpire on the field who decides if the ball would have hit the wicket and he is the one who decides when a batsman is leg before wicket or not.

Dismissal (cricket) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If the ball strikes any part of the batsman's anatomy (not necessarily the leg), and, in the umpire's judgement, the ball would have hit the batsman's stumps had his anatomy not intervened, then the batsman is out.
There are some subtleties, however, to do with where the ball pitches (bounces), whether the batsman intentionally hit the ball with his body or attempted to play a legitimate stroke with the bat, and exactly where it hits the batsman in relation to the line of the stumps.
If a fielder uses the ball to remove the bails from either set of stumps whilst the batsmen are running between the wickets (or otherwise away from the crease during the course of play), then the batsman (striker or non-striker) is out.

Then the trajectory of the ball and point of impact on the batsman's pads is judged by the umpire, such that it would have crashed into the stumps, had the batsman's pads not been in the way.
LBW decisions are also given if the batsman does NOT attempt to hit the ball, and the ball pitches outside off stump, then turns into the batsman.

This method is the sixth most common method of dismissal after caught, bowled, leg before wicket, run out and stumped.
Although a bowler is given credit for the wicket, it is not a method of dismissal that a bowler actively seeks and it is relatively uncommon.
A batsman may not be given out Hit wicket if the ball is not actually delivered by the bowler or if the delivery is a no ball (ie a delivery that is not fair).

As regards the new L.B.W. rule, I hope myself it will not come into force, as in my opinion there is not enough in it to make it worth the alteration, and also I think it gives the umpire too large a scope.
Some players seem to think it does not matter where the leg (or part of the body) is so long as the leg stops the ball from hitting the wicket-they don"t know that any part of the personmust be between wicket and wicket.

 Leg spin - Wikipedia
While very difficult to bowl accurately, it is the most effective form of spin bowling against right-handed batters as the spin takes the ball away from the batter rather than in towards them, which is much more difficult to deal with.
Good leg spin bowlers are also able to bowl deliveries that behave unexpectedly, including the googly, which turns the opposite way to a normal legspinner, and the topspinner, which doesn't deviate significantly.
However, leg spin has again become popular with cricket fans and a successful part of cricket teams, as the contest between batter and bowler is perhaps more cerebral than the physical contest between batters and faster bowlers.

Leg break -   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-07)
A leg break is bowled by holding the cricket ball in the palm of the hand with the seam running across under all the fingers.
When the ball bounces on the pitch, the spin causes it to deviate towards the left from the bowler's perspective; this is to the right from the batsman's point of view, or towards the off side of a right-handed batsman.
A left-handed batsman has less difficulty facing leg spin bowling, because the ball moves in towards the batsman's body, meaning the batsman's legs are usually in the path of the ball if it misses the bat or takes an edge.

At each end of the wicket are placed three sticks adjacent to each other in an upright position: these are the 'stumps'.
A batsman can also be out 'leg before wicket' or 'lbw': this is one of the more complex and vexatious rules and usually involves the ball striking the batsman's leg-protectors or 'pads' and the likelihood of the onward trajectory of the ball striking the wicket has the player's anatomy not intervened.
Either player can be 'run-out' if the wicket towards which they are running during the course of play is struck with the ball prior to their reaching the safety of the crease.

Jamaica Gleaner - Umpires now saying yes to slow bowlers - Tuesday | March 1, 2005
OF ALL the ways that a batsman can be dismissed in cricket, the one that causes the most controversy is leg before wicket, and when all is said and done, that is why after years of resistance, the ICC finally decided a few years ago on neutral umpires for every Test match.
The most common 'bad' decision, however, is the leg before decision.
They believed that the ball would have hit the wicket, they saw no reason why the bowlers should not get their just reward, and they made their decisions according to the law.

A bowling "all-rounder", in an 86-Test career he took 431 wickets (at the time a record) at the excellent average of 22.29, and made 3124 test runs at 27.16, including 2 centuries and 16 fifties.
Initially extremely quick, as the years progressed he gained accuracy, movement off the wicket and in the air, and a reputation that probably gained him quite a few wickets on its own.
His economical action was notable for his close approach to the wicket at the bowler's end (to the point where he occasionally knocked the bails off in his approach), a line which meant he was able to trap many batsmen leg before wicket.
