Leg press - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The leg press is a weight training exercise in which the individual pushes a weight away from them using their legs.
Being a compound exercise, the leg press is unquestionably more effective than isolation exercises like the leg extension or the leg curl.
Due to the safety concerns associated with the squat, however, the leg press is often used as the primary lower body exercise.

Doug Daniels - The Daniels File
The leg press is a perfect candidate for light days when you may choose not to squat at all.
One type is the 45-degree leg press on a sled, another is the 'universal' style in which the lifter sits down and presses the weight straight-ahead.
The leg press is usually classified as an isolation exercise, but unlike other isolation exercises, such as the stiff-legged deadlift, a lifter can generally use more weight in the leg press than he can use in the targeted squat.

 Squats vs. Leg Press
And there is, or seems to be, far less transference from the leg press to the squat than I thought.
Leg press isolates the legs and removes all extraneous factors such as balance and allows one to push the leg muscles much harder than you ever could in a squat.
The leg press is not as much of a multi-joint movement and you may find using the leg press helpful to building legs but for the whole body work, squats are king.

Contract your abs through all phases of the leg press to hold your lumbar spine and pelvis in a neutral and constant position.
To be even more specific to cycling, once the two legged leg press is mastered in your beginning strength training phases, you should move on to single leg presses during the middle and later phases.
Be extra careful when doing single leg presses and make sure that your pelvis stays neutral and stationary throught the one sided motion.

This is why leg training is so important to the overall development of the body.
The massive stimulus sent to the CNS during and after an ultra-high intensity leg workout is what triggers the greatest response from the body's anabolic systems.

Good Press Because hip ROM is less for the leg press than it is for the squat, hamstring and glute contribution is greatly reduced.
But don't dismiss the leg press as inferior and discard it from your routine - its one redeeming factor is superior quad development.
The leg press specializes in more direct targeting of the quad muscles and allows you to really hit 'em hard by over-loading them with a tremendous amount of weight.

his is one of the best all-around leg exercises, and with good reason, since the leg press works most of the upper-Ieg muscles, especially the quadriceps, the muscles on top of the thighs, which help you leap and sprint.
To do this exercise, you'll need a leg press machine- sit in it with your feet on the foot plate in front of you (make sure the seat is adjusted so your knees are bent at about a go-degree angle or slightly less).
Now push forward on the foot plates and straighten your legs until they're almost fully extended in front of you.

I've been doing leg presses ever since I started working out in september last year but I've been thinking of changing it to squats lately, I'm seeing lots of people on forums all over saying it's a must-do exercise.
Presses will work the quads just as well of not better and they are easier on the knees.
Alternate the leg press and the squat - maybe even take a month off every now then so the exercises you normally do can shock your body again, but like i say concentrate on pain from form not pain from weight.
