A citation is a reference to legal authorities and precedents such as statutes, cases, regulations, and law review articles.
Citations are used in arguments to courts, legal textbooks, law review articles and the like to establish or fortify the propositions argued.
Citations to legal materials follow a standard format which makes it possible for anyone using a law library to find cited cases, statutes, regulations, and law review articles.

 Universal Citation
While a uniform citation system should not be adopted without due consideration of the inherent problems that do exist in such a system, most of the depictions of these problems have made bogeymen out of stumbling blocks.
Citations to scrolls took a simple form: the number of the scroll and the paragraph number of the material being cited.
A uniform citation system would, for example, Lexis-Nexis asserted, assist judges and court staff in performing their tasks because it would provide a means of initially, rather than post hoc, identifying opinions issued by the courts.

 "Citation" Defined & Explained
CITATION - The legal equivalent of a footnote; it appears, however, in the body of a brief or memo.
A citation contains the name of the case or other authority, the name of the book in which it is found, the volume in which it appears, its page or section number and the year decided or enacted.
Citations ought not to be made to prove what is not doubted; but when a controverted point is mooted it is highly proper to cite the laws and cases or other authorities in support of the controverted proposition.

 Legal Research Materials: Legal Citation
Case citation serves two major functions: first, a complete citation allows the reader to find the decision; second, it should convey valuable information about the case, including the date it was handed down, court level, jurisdiction and case history (if included).
In the Spring of 1999, however, the Canadian Citation Committee issued a report proposing "A Neutral Citation Standard for Canadian Case Law" ; this report was subsequently endorsed by the Canadian Judicial Council on June 28, 1999.
The proposed citation standard has three essential elements: (1) the style of cause, (2) the core of the citation with the year, the tribunal identifier and the ordinal number, and (3) some optional elements which can be added in order to increase readability and precision.

Ray Patterson, Legal Ethics and the Lawyer's Duty of Loyalty, 29 Emory L.J. Generally, when you are using LegalCitation, you will enter either the Inclusive pages or the initial page in the bibliographic record, and the pinpoint reference in Access keys in your document.
Alternatively, when you are entering records in legal citation for works you will cite only once, or only with reference to a specific passage, you can elect to enter the pinpoint reference in the record itself.
For legal dictionaries, encyclopedias, and public documents, it is sometimes more convenient to simply enter the pinpoint reference in the record, so that you can enter abstracts for different entries in the dictionary.

The format for citations to legal materials is different from the format for scholarly citations to books and periodicals in general.
After the full citation has been given at least once in the preceding five citations, or after the case has been discussed by name in the text, the case may be referred to by the name of one party.
The format of the citation is of secondary importance, although professional editors often care more about the format than the accuracy of the information, or the appropriateness of the author's choice of the cited source.
