Legend of Earthsea came across as mediocre fantasy filled with cliche and little diversity and as a terrible interpretation of Le Guin's books.

Review: “Legend of Earthsea” Brings LeGuin’s World To Life - SciFi TV
It’s pretty clear from the outset that we owe the realization of “Earthsea” to the success of other fantasy realms in recent years; most notably the “Lord of the Rings” series by J.R.R. Tolkien (the extended DVD of “Return of the King” appeared in stores Dec. 14).
In Earthsea, the true name of a person or creature can be used to control it.

 UGO.com Film/TV - Review - Legend of Earthsea Super-Feature
One area in which SCI FI does deserve credit, however, is in that they do manage to treat the storyline and the characters with a seriousness that's often lacking in fantasy and sci-fi, especially on TV.
Sadly, the bad guys in Legend of Earthsea are just further proof that many, many filmmakers have lost the ability to bring us villains who feel as if they pose an actual threat not only to the wellbeing of the main characters, but also the world at large.
It's a problem for fans of the Earthsea books, because you know there's a lot more here to explore, and you'll more than likely miss out on seeing some of your favorite stuff rendered on the small screen.
