NATURE. The Octopus Show. A Legend of the Deep PBS
But the over 250 known species of octopuses appear to have completely lost their hard parts, evolving instead into a firm but flexible sack of tissues.
It follows the efforts of Mike DeGruy, a dedicated wildlife photographer, to capture these acrobatic but often shy animals on film, both in a laboratory-built "octopus gymnasium" and in the wild, deep sea.
But all are based on a remarkable real animal: the octopus.

Then there is the blue-ringed octopus of Australia and the South Pacific, which is noteworthy for another reason: its venom is deadly poison.
Researchers believe the North Pacific octopus -- known to science as Octopus dofleini -- may grow to over 30 feet long and weigh 100 pounds.
And when it comes time to mate, some octopuses advertise the fact with bright flashes of color sure to attract a partner.

Paul Jackson : Black Octopus - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Something of a lost funk legend, Black Octopus was recorded by bassist Paul Jackson during a 1978 tour of Japan with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, but didn't see an American release until more than two decades later.
Of the four additions, which nearly double the album's running time, the instrumental "T-Bolt" is probably closest to what would have been expected from a Jackson solo effort, its tasteful fusion a descendant of Hancock's '70s work.
Yet if Black Octopus' musical tentacles occasionally reach beyond their grasp, the overall result is still an essential for any savvy DJ or fusion fan.

Xmuzik's Mind Boggling Blog: the truth about Japanese tentacle rape porn (hentai)
Although it is now possible to show scenes that are a lot more graphic, tentacle sex has a strong following today and in the anime world, Maeda’s ‘pioneering’ work, Urotsuki Doji (Legend of the Overfiend) is considered a classic of sorts.
Although most people think that tentacle sex is something that could only have come from the mind of a 20th century illustrator, there have been sexual images involving octopi in Japan for almost 200 years.
Hokusai’s Octopus paintings are said to be the inspiration for modern tentacle sex, but his works were not violent, and the women in the Amorous Octopus seems to be quite enjoying herself, unlike the girls in modern hentai anime.

In Fijian mythology the Shark-God is the scourge of the fishermen, eating their fish as well as the men who fall overboard.

Chilean 'blob' may be giant octopus -- or just blubber
A 13-ton, 40-foot-long bloblike carcass discovered along the southern coast of Chile last week is being heralded around the world as possible proof of the fabled "Octopus giganteus," a massive species of octopus that until now had been the stuff of legend.
The biggest Giant Pacific octopus (Octopus dofleini) found here was only 10 feet shy of the Chilean blob, he noted, and it weighed less than 500 pounds.
The report out of Chile says the tissue found weighs 13 tons, he said, which means it's unlikely to be an octopus.

Shapeshifting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shapeshifting is not considered scientifically or medically possible for humans (and animal shapeshifting is not any more extensive than that of the octopus, simply contorting body shape), but it is a common theme in myth and legend and a popular theme in science fiction and fantasy stories.
Shapeshifting can be a rich symbolical and narrative tool and shapeshifting fiction has been around at least since the days of ancient Greece.
It is worthy to note that while the popular idea of a shapeshifter is of a human being who turns into something else, there are numerous myths about animals that can transform themselves as well.

Popular shapeshifting creatures in myths and legends are werewolves and vampires (mostly of European, Canadian, and Native American/early American origin), the fox spirits or were-foxes of East Asia (including the kitsune of Japan), and the gods, goddesses, and demons of numerous mythologies, such as Loki from Norse mythology or Proteus from Greek mythology.
Although shapeshifting to the form of a wolf is specifically known as lycanthropy, and such creatures who undergo such change are called lycanthropes, those terms have also been used to describe any human-animal transformations and the creatures who undergo them.

USS Argonaut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
United States Navy have borne the name USS Argonaut, after a relative of the octopus -- sometimes called the paper nautilus -- which propels itself underwater by expelling a jet of water.
Of course, the name is ultimately derived from the band of heroes in Greek legend who sailed with Jason in the ship Argo to retrieve the Golden Fleece.
The name Argonaut may also have been inspired by the submarine of that name built in 1897 by Simon Lake that was the first submarine to navigate extensively in the open sea.

The DVD Journal Quick Reviews: Tarzan, the Ape Man
Jane, it turns out, has a penchant for getting attacked by animals, and, later, Tarzan is forced to rescue her again, this time from an anaconda that he wrestles in a series of endless dissolves that compares unfavorably to Bela Lugosi struggling with a rubber octopus in Ed Wood Jr.'s Bride of the Monster.
As the party heads out into the wild, they begin to hear stock Tarzan sound cues, which occasions Harris's relating in hushed tones the legend of an enormous white ape that just might be an actual man (and 100 feet tall, at that).
That's how long director John Derek waits to show off his wife Bo's "perfect ten" body in the allegedly erotic Tarzan, the Ape Man (1981), a film of thorough, unremitting ineptitude that treats Edgar Rice Burroughs's famed pulp creation like a service station urinal cake.

THE POLYNESIANS: OCEANIC NOMADS OF THE PACIFIC By Tani Jantsang
Legend there has Tangaroa leading a revolt against other gods and being cast into the ocean: a giant octopus imprisoned in the ocean!!
The Tahunas (Kahunas) or Native Priests preserved the oral doctrine in the religious origin of what they called by varied sounds: Maui, Mau, Muo, and Mu, as the name of an "ancient sunken land" that they say sank beneath the waves.
Note: throughout the Pacific, letters become interchanged, such as "l" and "r", "t" and "k", "n" and ng," and sounds drop out, so that the same deity often has varied names, e.g.: Tangaroa, Tanaroa, Tanaloa, Kanaloa and even Taroa.
