Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (commonly abbreviated to DKR) is a Batman comic book story written and drawn by Frank Miller and published by DC Comics from February to June 1986.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is especially notable as the series which dispels Batman's former campy image, a result of the 1960s television series and for pitting Batman and his former ally Superman against each other.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns takes place in a timeline outside the continuity of DC Comics's DC Universe, but is still considered at least partially faithful to the source material and Batman mythos at the time it debuted, as it makes use of post-Crisis characters.

 BATMAN-IN-COMICS -- REVIEW: "LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT," 197 & 198
LDK is a bit more of an anthology series, in that it contains independent story-arcs that don’t necessarily conform to the current story-line, style, or even continuity of the other Bat-books.
LDK briefly, during the “No Man’s Land” era conformed to the storyline depicted in the rest of the line, but shortly thereafter returned to the previous format, although arcs now vary in length from one issue to the customary five.
Naturally, The Dark Knight is to blame for all of this, and equally to blame for the pathetic life Webber finds for himself once released.

The story is a collection of vignettes, describing the inhabitants of a dilapidated hotel in the bad part of Gotham, and how they all came there.
The one jarring note is the actual Batman, who's seen to be uncharacteristically grinning at a crucial point.

When Helfer reread "Batman: Year One," which was the inspiration for "Legends of the Dark Knight," he came to a realization which sparked "Batman: Journey into Knight." "I realized that 'Batman: Year One really isn't so much about Batman as it is about Gordon," Helfer explained.

As the majority of the Batman titles are wrapped up in the major crossover epic known as Infinite Crisis, Legends of the Dark Knight (issues #197-199) has been flying under the radar with a smaller self-contained story arc.
In Infinite Crisis, the writers are focused on the "Dark Knight" aspects of Batman.
Batman isn't an easy person to know, but there is a person in there - a flawed, fragile human being - under that cape and cowl.

Eric Sunde's Review: This arc continues the recent trend of LOTDK being the best Bat-title that actually stars Batman as Erik Webber, a man with nothing to lose, continues his revenge plot against Batman.
Pfeifer's story is unique in using an all new character and making him an actual threat and challenge to Batman, then watching Batman use his resources to figure out what is going on.
The ending to the issue seems to make it seem like the next issue will be anticlimactic, but this story certainly has some swerves left.

"It's called 'Legends of the Dark Knight,' and it's about some kids who each have a different take on Batman.
One thinks he's kind of friendly and goofy, like the old fifties Dick Sprang Batman, and tells a story we'd see animated in that style, and another kid says 'No, that's not Batman at all, Batman's this really old mean guy,' and you'd see her story with Batman as the gritty Frank Miller Dark Knight.
At some point the kids would actually see Batman trying to stop a villain or something, but at the end, they still wouldn't agree on what he was really like."
