Legio III Gallica was a Roman legion levied by Julius Caesar around 49 BC, for his civil war against the conservative republicans led by Pompey.
Following Caesar's death, III Gallica was integrated in the army of Mark Antony, a member of the second triumvirate, for his campaigns against the Parthians.
III Gallica was used in Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo's campaign against the Parthians over the control of Armenia (AD Corbulo's successes triggered emperor Nero's paranoia of persecution and eventually the general was forced to commit suicide.

 Legio III Gallica
Legio III Gallica: one of the Roman legions.
Using III Gallica, VI Ferrata, and X Fretensis, Corbulo captured the Armenian capitals Artaxata (modern Yerevan; 58) and Tigranocerta (59), and gave the Armenians a new, pro-Roman king, Tigranes (a great-grandson of the Jewish king Herod the Great).
However, coins suggest that at least a part of III Gallica was in Gaul during the reign of the Gallic emperor Postumus (260-269).

Roman legion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally, in the time of the Kings, the legio ("conscription") was the whole Roman army, composed of levied citizens.
At some point, possibly in the beginning of the Roman Republic after the kings were overthrown, the legio was subdivided into two separate legions, each one ascribed to one of the two Consuls.
Except for Legio I to IV, which were the consular armies (two per consul), other units were levied by campaign.

Legio III Augusta: one of the Roman legions.
The emperor Caligula (37-41) thought that this policy was risky, and saw to it that the commander of III Augusta was one of his appointees.
This suggests that III Augusta played a role in the civil war after the murder of the emperor Publius Helvius Pertinax, but we have no further evidence for this.

The Roman legion (from the Latin legio, meaning levy) was the basic military unit of ancient Rome.
Much of Roman history during this time is founded on legends, but it is believed that during the reign of Servius Tullius, all Roman able-bodied, property-owning male citizens were first divided into five classes for military service based on wealth, since soldiers provided their own weapons and equipment.
At some point, possibly in the beginning of the Roman Republic, the legio was subdivided into two separate legions, each one ascribed to one of the two consuls.

 Roman Legions
The name Legio is coeval with the foundation of Rome, and always denoted a body of troops, which, although subdivided into several smaller bodies, was regarded as forming an organised whole.
Legio Decima Equitata, the Tenth Legion of Julius Ceasar, was not the same unit as Legio X Fretensis, which was reported to have been officially formed sometime during 712 or 713 AUC (41 to 40 BC) by Octavian.
Legio X Fretensis derived its name from the Fretum Siculum, which is the water channel located between Italy and Sicily, now called the Straits of Messina.

The Legions: How Do They Get Their Names And Number - Ancient Roman Empire Forums
IE when Marius and recruited legions, his first was likely Legio I even though Q. Caecilius Metellus in Numidia and other Legates who were operating in Cisalpine Gaul probably already had a legio I from prior recruiting periods.
Later emperors sometimes started over (Nero recruited Legio I Italica in AD 66 rather than give it a number of continuation) whereas others filled in the blanks (Trajan recruited Legio XXX Ulpia Victrix and named it XXX because it was simply the 30th active legion at the time).
As for names, some were given at recruitment based on who recruited it (Legio XXII Deiotariana founded by the King of Galatia, Deiotarus), or its place of foundation or intended purpose (Gallica, Italica, Parthica etc.) or were honored for various deeds in battle or service.

On May 16, 218, Bassianus was taken to the camp of legio III Gallica and proclaimed emperor, taking the name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (he is usually called Elagabalus, after the god whom he worshipped).
Upon hearing of the proclamation of Elagabalus, and the failure of the legate of III Gallica to retake the camp, Macrinus, who had traveled to Apamea to garner support from legio II Parthica, proclaimed his son Diadumenianus as co-emperor.
