Once I knew the name structure used in the Times for my chap for his DSO, it became much easier to search the London Gazette website, and find the Legion d'Honneur award (Chevalier) - which I did not see (may have missed) in the Times Index.
The Legion of Honour would have been gazetted because being a foreign order the necessary approval from the King would be needed.

The Legion of Honour was an institution that was open to all men, although initially only Frenchmen, who had either acted bravely on the battlefield or had served civil France in some exemplary way.
