The Legion of Honour recognises the high esteem in which Australian veterans are held for their role in the liberation of France during World War II.

The Legion of Honour was an institution that was open to all men, although initially only Frenchmen, who had either acted bravely on the battlefield or had served civil France in some exemplary way.
It was created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte as part of a reward system for good service and its inductees received the Legion's small white-enamelled cross, which hung on a red-silk ribbon, as a public show of gratitude.

The order’s motto is Honneur et patrie ("Honour and Motherland"), and its seat is the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur on the Left Bank of the River Seine in Paris.
This decoration, a cross on a large sash and a silver star with an eagle became known as the Grand Aigle, and later in 1814 as the grand cordon (French for "Large sash").

Reporters Without Borders voiced outrage today that French President Jacques Chirac bestowed the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour - one of the highest decorations awarded by a country that considers itself the birthplace of human rights - on Russian President Vladimir Putin on 22 September.
An Elysée Palace spokesman said the award, given on the penultimate day of a visit by President Putin that ended with a French - Russian - German tripartite summit on 23 September in Compiègne, was given for his contribution to friendship between Russia and France.
The organisation added: “Elevating a press freedom predator to the rank of Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour is an insult to all those in Russia who fight for press freedom, the freedom to be informed and the survival of effective democracy in their country.”
