Legion of Substitute Heroes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Legion of Substitute Heroes is a group of fictional characters in the future of the DC Comics universe.
The "Subs", as they are often called, are a group of rejected applicants to the Legion of Super-Heroes who banded together, hoping to prove to the Legion that their powers were not as useless as the Legionnaires claimed.
During the V4 Legion of Super Heroes, the "Subs" came into their own as an insurgent group that was helping the Terran resistance to the Dominators.

Although Levitz substantially changed the Legion and its characters and greatly altered the tone of the series from what had gone before, his run was extremely popular and was a high-water mark in the Legion's history.
The limited series Legion Lost (2000-2001) chronicled the difficult journey of these Legionnaires to return to their home, while the ensuing limited series Legion Worlds (2001) showed what was happening back in the United Planets during their absence.
The future universe of this Legion is an emotionally and mentally repressive society which involves human sexuality and contact being kept at arms' length as well as Orwellian surveillance of minors.

The Legion was based on Earth and protected an organization of humans and aliens called the United Planets.
However, the Legion's golden age did eventually end, and their last appearance in Adventure Comics was #380 (May 1969), when they were displaced by Supergirl.
With Legion volume 4 #0 and Legionnaires #0 (both October 1994), a new Legion was created out of whole cloth, beginning with a variation on the classic origin story.

The Legion was originally a sort of super-hero clubhouse for Superboy, who would fly to the future to pal around with superheroes his own age when things got too claustrophobic in Smallville.
In order to join the Legion, a youth had to be under 18 (the voting age in the 30th century is apparently 14, education having finally been perfected) and have at least one super-power that no other Legionnaire possessed.
Legion leaders, elected by the members, choose who is to go on which missions; these decisions are often critical, because space is vast enough that the rest of the Legion can't easily turn up to save the day if the team finds itself short-handed.

The Legion of Super-Heroes was merely a clever title for a group of teenaged superheroes (only three of whom were actually named) from the far future who went back in time to pay tribute to the greatest teenaged superhero of them all - the Boy of Steel, Superboy.
New galactic threats abound as the Legion squares off against such villains as the Unkillables, Dr. Morlo and his sinister creations, the Chemoids, and the armies of the Dark Circle, who would later be among the Legion's deadliest foes.
Perhaps the foremost addition to the Legion canon was the filling in of one of the most obvious gaps in the group's history: their origin.
