Topic: Leguminous

  Leguminous Cover Plant, Mucuna bracteata
This perennial leguminous creepers have deep roots and produce significant quantities of litter which decomposes slowly, and increases the fertility of surface soil.
The social problem of cattle grazing on the leguminous covers and drought season, further exasperates planter in the establishment of legumes.
In the past planters were often judged by the ability to establish pure leguminous covers; however this is a fallacy now, due to shortage of labour and virulent weeds.

Leguminous fodder trees in the farming system - an over view of research at the humid zone programme of ILCA in ...
The potential of leguminous fodder trees in farming systems of humid West Africa is considered in the light of research work carried out by the Humid Zone Programme of the International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA) at Ibadan, Nigeria.
The potential of leguminous fodder trees within the farming system of the lowland tropics should be seen in their multipurpose nature and their ease of integration into existing farming systems.
Leguminous fodder trees can be used for the improvement of both crop and livestock production and thus offer a means of linking small ruminant production with arable crop production.

Foliar-applied methanol and nitrogen for increased productivity on leguminous plants - Patent 5532204
The invention pertains to a method for increasing the seed yield of leguminous plants in general and soybeans in particular by a foliar-applied fertilization method at an R5 seed growth stage for soy bean plants and the pod growth stage in other leguminous plants.
The method requires spraying the leguminous plants with a methanol solution that is up to 50% of a water based solution; then subsequently or concurrently applying a urea based nitrogen fertilizer at 25-50 pounds/acre.
Leguminous plants are characterized by their ability to fix nitrogen microbially from the atmosphere, usually in nodules connected to their root systems, and their ability to use fixed nitrogen to produce proteinaceous seeds.

Release of Nitrogen From a Leguminous Cover Crop and the Subsequent   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Leguminous cover crops begin to release nitrogen to the soil once they are incorporated into the soil and adequate water is available for microbial decomposition of the plant tissue.
The amount of nitrogen that is released from a productive cover crop can clearly be substantial, however the rate of release of nitrogen and the duration of the release is not well understood.
These results indicate that the nitrogen released from a leguminous cover crop such as vetch can provide significant amounts of nitrogen for subsequent vegetable crop production, however long-season, high-nitrogen demanding crops such as bell peppers may need supplemental applications of late season fertilizer for optimal growth.

An Agricultural Testament - Albert Howard - 6
After the role of the nodules on the roots of leguminous plants in the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen was proved, the problems of green-manuring naturally centred round the utilization of the leguminous crop in adding to the store of combined nitrogen and organic matter in the soil.
At the expenditure of a little trouble, the leguminous nodule might be used as a nitrogen factory while the remainder of the crop could provide humus.
Heavy crops of sugar-cane were produced at Shahjahanpur in the United Provinces by intercepting the nitrates accumulated at the break of the south-west monsoon by means of a leguminous crop and then converting this into humus with the assistance of the autumn accumulation of nitrate in the same soil.

Cover Crops (Kancagan) are established and maintained in rubber and oil palm plantations for conserving the soil and for improving or maintaining the soil structure and fertility.
Cover crops are leguminous creepers, which are easy to establish.
They are the most desirable species of plants that can be used as ground covers in rubber and oil palm plantations, because they have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen which can later be used by the immature rubber and oil palm plants, besides the other characters common to all cover plants.

Root Nodule Bacteria and Leguminous Plants by Edwin Broun Fred, Ira Lawrence Baldwin, and Elizabeth McCoy first appeared seventy years ago as part of a series, University of Wisconsin Studies (no. 52, Science no. 5), published by the University of Wisconsin in 1932.
A pioneering effort that brought together years of source material from English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, and the Scandinavian languages, Root Nodule Bacteria and Leguminous Plants was a thorough and critical examination that not only synthesized research findings in light of then-current knowledge, but also suggested areas where new research was needed.
