In fact, one well known Leica lens aficionado and tester claims that the E3 is fully the equal of Leica's other contemporary lenses of similar focal lengths, and actually superior to earlier generation fixed focal length lenses.
Leica has finally brought out a motor winder for the M series that is in my opinion worthy of the M6, and appropriately sized.
Leicas were de rigueur when shooting on a film or TV set because of their almost silent shutter and winding.

Leica - the Legend More than any other camera, the Leica is bound up with the style of modern photography that aims to capture life surrounding us.
The Leica was a high quality camera, but at the same time had a simple, straightforward construction.
That the Leica was the photographer's camera of choice was already apparent, but there was another circumstance that had great significance for the successful establishment of the new photography: the introduction of modern colour film by Agfa and Kodak in the mid-1930s.

Leica Digilux 2: Digital Photography Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Leica are promoting this camera as the "analog" digital camera, in essence this is driven by the camera's design and control layout which is almost identical to a standard manual film camera (such as aperture ring, shutter speed dial etc.) The lens is also pretty special, a 28 - 90 mm equiv.
It is the first Leica digital camera that can be operated like a professional analogue camera: the crucial photographic parameters such as focus, aperture, shutter speed, and focal length can be set using rings on the lens and a shutter speed dial, as on a classic reflex camera.
The LEICA DIGILUX 2’s 2.5“ LC display is transreflexive: a combination of backlighting and use of the available light increases its brightness.

Leica M3 When I was four years old, looking through a stack of Life magazines, I came across Eugene Smith’s photo essay “The Country Doctor.” I was fascinated by the pictures, especially the shot of the doctor—in a stupor of fatigue--slumped against a kitchen stove.

Light from the lens is split into two when it hits the reflex mirror — one portion goes through the semi-silvered mirror to the light meter at the base of the mirror box, the rest is reflected upwards through the pentaprism and viewfinder.
