The Empire Theatre, Leicester Square - May 2004 Special Feature
This house was built between 1632 and 1636 by Robert Sydney, Earl of Leicester, whose father, Robert, was the brother of the famous Sir Philip Sydney, killed at the battle of Zutphen.
From 1712 to 1760, Leicester House was the palace of the Princes of Wales, and from their constant family quarrels was most happily named by Pennant "the pouting place of princes." During this period a passage was built connecting Leicester with Savile House.
Leicester House was subsequently, occupied by private persons and then passed into the hands of Sir Ashton Lever, who there opened his "Holophusikon," which was a museum of curiosities of all kinds, including all the objects of interest collected by Captain Cook.

Leicester built a two-storeyed banquetting house in the garden by the river in 1575, (Footnote 20) and possibly made other improvements to the inn, called Leicester House.
By 1593 the house was also known as Essex House, (Footnote 28) and Robert Devereux, earl of Essex, was also living there: in February 1601 it was the scene of his surrender after his abortive rebellion, (Footnote 29) and both he and Blount were executed for treason.
(Footnote 37) He was using his house at Essex House as his London residence by 1665, when he was recommending to the duchess that rebuilding some of the leased property would increase her income from the house, and he alludes to whether a subtenant would 'continue his house as a tennis court'.

Leicester City Council - Extending your house: External design
In traditional detached and semi-detached housing areas the infilling of the spaces between with two storey extensions could create a terraced appearance at odds with the rhythm of the streetscene.
In a row of houses where features such as windows, doors, roof and wall materials, bays, porches, etc. are of a consistent design it is even more important for any extension to reflect the original character.
On terraced and semidetached houses in a road of similar houses avoid refacing the existing house in either paint, render or cladding because this will be disrupt the overall appearance of the street.
