Leicestershire or Leicester, an inland county, nearly in the centre of England, but a little to the E. It is bounded on the N by Derbyshire and Notts, on the E by Lincolnshire and Rutlandshire, on the S by Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, on the W by Warwickshire, Staffordshire, and Derbyshire.
The county is governed by a lord lieutenant and custos rotulorum, and a county council of 18 aldermen and 54 councillors.
Population of the county (1801) 130,082, (1821) 174,571, (1841) 215,867, (1861) 237,412, (1881) 321,258, (1891) 373,584 in the ancient county, and 375,092 in the administrative county.

Colonel Purefoy’s convenient absence led him later to be one of the signatories to the Death Warrant of Charles I. However, at the time of the Restoration of the Monarchy, all Purefoy Estates were confiscated by the Crown due to his anti Royalist actions.
The only part of the Hall to be reclaimed from the charred remains was the oak hall way door, which remains to this day as the door to the porch of the adjacent Parish Church of St. Theobald and St. Chad.
However, the Hall and its surrounding 35 acre estate are private grounds, for residents' use only, and are not open to the public.

This Order is made under section 3 of the Transport and Works Act 1992 and authorises Leicestershire County Council (the Council) compulsorily to acquire land and construct works to restore to navigation a disused length of the Ashby de la Zouch Canal (the Ashby Canal).
There are supplementary provisions, including provision for cases where the Council wishes to acquire only a part of land (article 21), for the extinction or suspension of private rights of way (article 22), and for a time limit for the Council to acquire land (article 23).
It also gives the Council powers to manage the canal and charge for its use (article 25), sets the jurisdictional limits of the canal as between the Council and British Waterways (article 26), and transfers to the undertaker from the British Waterways Board certain statutory rights, powers, privileges and obligations (article 27).
