Ludwig Leichhardt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt (October 23, 1813 - 1848?) was a Prussian explorer and naturalist of Sorb descent.
After recovering, Leichhardt spent 6 weeks in 1847 to examine the course of the Condamine River and the country between the route of another expedition led by Mitchell in 1846 and his own route, covering nearly 1000 km.
The mystery of Leichhardt's fate remained in the minds of explorers for many years: during David Carnegie's 1896 expedition through the Gibson and Great Sandy Deserts, he encountered some Indigenous Australians who had amongst their possessions an iron tent peg, the lid of a tin matchbox, and part of the ironwork of a saddle.

 Ludwig Leichhardt
Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848) was a German explorer and scientist who came to Australia in 1842 to study its rocks and wildlife.
Leichhardt was a very poor bushman and the party was always becoming lost.
In 1846, Leichhardt set out on his first attempt to cross Australia from the Darling Downs in Queensland to the Swan River in Western Australia, but was forced to turn back because of the heat and drought.

Leichhardt seemed only to become aware of the glowering resentment of his fellow travellers at the very end.

 Leichhardt as a bushman
Leichhardt learned all he could from the Aborigines and this enabled him and his exploring party to live off the land to a great extent, unlike some other explorers, who carried lots of food with them.
Leichhardt also took measurements to record their position, and wrote up every geological, botanical and zoological feature they encountered, and developed a map of the route, recording every river, mountain, range and lake they saw, and gave to these places names of people in the colony who had helped him.
Leichhardt was under no obligation to name places after people in England because his expedition was privately organised, not financed by the government.

Where Leichhardt Died   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Being thus once on the track of Leichhardt, it became a fascinating study, as I sifted the whole subject down to the bedrock, and waited impatiently for a chance to go west to the Warrego, locate the fatal creek, and hear the whole story over again, extended and completed by the old Warrego fls.
The fls left all the bodies where they were killed, and Leichhardt where he died, and the horses, mules, and bullocks, were all speared from time to time and eaten.
The medal was fatal to the tribe, and one by one each wearer of that Britannia medal symbol assumed unwarrantable airs and an intolerably despotic attitude, and the whole of the revenues of the tribe until they rose up in wrath and laid him gently out with a nulla.

Purported Leichhardt party relics and skeletal remains were reported in an area extending from the Musgrave Range, south-west of Alice Springs, to the western edge of the Simpson Desert in northern South Australia, to Queensland’s Georgina River region.
Simpson’s “educated guess” is that Leichhardt took samples of the pituri plant – guarded so jealously by the Wonkajera – and that this may have been the catalyst for Leichhardt and his party being attacked and wiped out.
Says Mal Debney: “If Leichhardt was attempting to follow the creeks through the limestone ridges and gidgee country, he would have had a tough time of it – particularly in a dry year, and more so as he didn’t know where he was going.

Beyond Leichhardt (Glen McLaren) - book review
Rather than another history of the explorers who mapped Australia, Beyond Leichhardt is an account of the skills and techniques which underlay their successes (and failures).
McLaren does describe the formal scientific training (or lack thereof) of the explorers and their companions, but this is clearly not his main interest or an area where he has much expertise (he offers little more than bland generalities on the subject).
It has nothing resembling an introduction or a conclusion: the opening chapter is a sketchy seven page account of the rise of British scientific societies; the closing chapter stops abruptly with the return of the Horn expedition in 1896.
