Topic: Leiden Observatory

Leiden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leiden's medieval name was Leithen, and it was governed until 1420 by burgraves, the representatives of the courts of Holland.
Leiden is also known as one of the places where some of the Pilgrim Fathers lived for a time in the early 17th century before their departure to the New World.
The population of Leiden which, it is estimated, reached 100,000 in 1640, had sunk to 30,000 between 1796 and 1811, and in 1904 was 56,044.

Leiden Observatory ("Sterrewacht Leiden"), founded in 1633, is the oldest university astronomy department in the world, and the largest astronomy department in the Netherlands.
In 1974, the observatory moved from the "old observatory" in the centre of town to a modern building shared with physicists, and close to the departments of mathematics and chemistry.
Leiden Observatory has a large network of international collaborations and has a long tradition and an internationally acknowledged reputation for education in astronomy.

This building on the canal ring (Singel) defining the boundaries of old Leiden positively oozes with history, dating to 1861.
This was one of the first places that astronomy "with a multispectral character" (to quote from a job announcement I once answered) could flourish.
The Leiden Observatory is one of a couple which took their names so long ago that the spelling has changed since then.

Willem Jacob Luyten, March 7, 1899—November 21, 1994 | By Arthur Upgren | Biographical Memoirs
His early years at the Lick Observatory and as a guest investigator at the Royal Greenwich Observatory witnessed his development and application of techniques using proper motions to estimate the distances of stars in large numbers.
Through the use of Hertzsprung's concept of the reduced proper motion to obtain statistical parallaxes for common stars, he was the first to provide a realistic census of stars in the solar neighborhood and an HR diagram more truly representative of the fainter stars that dominate the solar neighborhood.
At some time during the three-year interim, the observatory and its 0.25-meter refracting telescope were moved to the top of the then new physics building, a questionable improvement in location.

 About La Silla
The idea of establishing a common large observatory that joined the European astronomers was born in the spring of 1953, in the mind of the renowned astronomer Walter Baade.
Besides, the draft stated that the observatory should be located in the southern hemisphere and should have a large optical telescope and a Schmidt telescope as "Initial program", considering a future extension with any kind of other instrumentation.
However, by the end of 1963, it was clear that the observatory could not be built in this continent, mainly because of the deterioration of the atmospheric seeing in the course of the night, as a result of the decrease in the temperature.

The Observatory was initially known as the Transvaal Meteorological Department, and as the name indicate, the main concern was the weather.
On 29 October 1902, the South African Association for the Advancement of Science petitioned the Government to establish an observatory in or near Johannesburg, "for the collection and distribution of meteorological observations throughout the Transvaal Colony".
The Observatory achieved its greatest fame during the time that it was known as the Union Observatory (1912-1961).

Two further failures in 1875 and 1876 had his father in despair, but having a friend H G van de Sande-Bakhuyzen as director of Leiden Observatory, Thomas's father was able to put in a good word for his son.
Stieltjes became assistant at Leiden Observatory in April 1877 but his father, who had done so much to help his son, was not to live long after helping his son to obtain this position for he died in Rotterdam on 23 June 1878.
It is a great credit to van de Sande-Bakhuyzen, the director of Leiden Observatory, that he responded quickly to Stieltjes' request on 1 January 1883 to stop his observational work to allow him to work more on mathematical topics.

The astronomers, whose work has just been published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, were Wouter Vlemmings of Leiden Observatory, Philip Diamond of the University of Manchester and Huib Jan van Langevelde of the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE).
