Leigh made the journey down to the very bare bones of their squad due to a bout of 'flu in the squad along with several key first teamers out through injury.
Leigh largely dominated the first half and put plenty of pressure on the Whitehaven line, but the hosts' defensive stood firm and was impressively strong although this is traditionally to be expected from any Whitehaven outfit.
Leigh further increased their lead with a try from a jubilant former St Helens prop forward Sonny Nickle, who powered his way over from twenty yards out for a try which was easily converted by Neil Turley.

Leigh struck first in the second half, Richard Marshall zipping through a hole in the Hull defence to score with John Wilshere adding the conversion.
The loose-forward converted both tries and although the Centurions reached double figures with a try by Rob Jackson, the game was effectively over as a contest, and it degenerated into a scrappy affair with far too many errors and penalties.

Leigh, faced with the possibility of being relegated if Wakefield and Salford won and they lost tonight, started the game in determined fashion despite their 10-match losing streak.

The Rams only played in top gear for about 15 minutes in the second half, and although they weren't playing badly, with Richard Agar putting the Centurions under pressure with two 40-20 kicks, it was never going to be enough away from home against a team in second place.

Leigh stole the lead once more 5 minutes later with another Wingfield penalty, and the Rams reverted back to their first half style of play, plenty of effort but for no reward.
