David Eddings (born July 7, 1931) is an American author who has written several best-selling series of epic fantasy novels.
David Eddings' wife, Leigh Eddings, is the uncredited co-author of many of his books and is acknowledged as such in his later works.
Born in Spokane, Washington, Eddings grew up in Puget Sound before graduating with a BA from Reed College in 1954 and an MA from the University of Washington in 1961.

David and Leigh Eddings, my favorite fantasy authoring team possibly of all time have released a new book, and more importantly, the beginning of a new series called The Dreamers.
I have loved Eddings' work since childhood, but every one of his series is followed by a sequal series that is very incredibly similar to the first series plot line wise.
In fact, it was Eddings and Lloyd Alexander that really got me into fantasy fiction, a love I hold dear to this day, some thirteen eyars after I frst discovered these novels.

The Rivan Codex begins with an introduction by Eddings explaining where he got his ideas, recommending that if one is planning to write fantasy, one should read medieval fiction which, unlike Victorian fiction, does not conveniently forget that boys and girls are different in very interesting ways.
These include "The Personal History of Belgarath the Sorcerer," "The Book of Alorn" (and all the other holy books of the various races), and histories of each of the Twelve Kingdoms, as written by the scholars of the Imperial Historical Society of Tolnedra, beginning as is fitting, with the Empire.
Closing out the book is an afterword in which Eddings dares his reader to become more familiar with the classics of the fantasy genre.

It is interesting to see Eddings working on a smaller canvas than usual--there is a fundamental niceness to his books that entirely gets its head here, along with an attractive sense of humour.
The epilogue finishes up the book in a similar way to Eddings previous books, and although it's nice to see consistency it would probably be more enjoyable to see a 'less-happy' conclusion.
Eddings agreed because the adventures of Sparhawk were same plot, same characters different names.

I've never really been one for Sci-Fantasy, but someone recommended David Eddings to me and I just devoured his novels.
Written with his wife, Leigh Eddings, they have weaved stories of wizards, knights, magical swords, enchanted stones, lovable characters and much more.
Personally, for anyone who has never read David Eddings and would like a taste of what's to offer, I would recommend starting off with Book 1 "Pawn of Prophecy" in the Belgariad series...then just try to put it down.

David Eddings spent much of his life in the United States Army, as a buyer for the Boeing Company, has been a grocery clerk, and has taught college English in various parts of the United States.
The Eddings state right off that these are two different tales, and since they are told by two different characters, it's up to the reader to decided who's remembering a truer version of events.
The Eddings' fantasy tends to have pretty simple plots, but I've always thought the reason that the Eddings have become so popular is the strength of their characters and the fabulous way that the novels seem familiar, even on the first read.

Althalus was just a thief, and only a good thief by the standards of the backwoods and hick towns where he spent most of his career; a trip to the big cities of the lowlands almost proved disastrous for him, because he could recognise neither real threats nor even more sophisticated forms of wealth.
What they are, however, are a pick-and-mix batch of stock characters of the type that the Eddings' appear to be able to trot out at will, thinly cloaked in new names, and slightly differing physical descriptions.
Being an Eddings fan however I will still buy his books when they come out but i feel that if he is to remain as popular as he is he need to try and put some fresh ideas into their novels to keep old and new fans alike entertained.

posts on 10/26/2005 9:02:00 PM I have read ALL of David's and David and Leigh Eddings books and have thoroughly enjoyed all, in fact I would say that the Edding's would have to be one of my favoured authors.
Since there was a large amount of time between the release dates of the books it was hard to pick up the storyline again and I almost decided not to read it.
Even though I have now almost finished the book it is still very confusing and I am starting to lose faith in Eddings ability to "pull off" the next book in the series withou the same confusion.
