  Leimen (Baden) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1981, the state government of Baden-Württemberg granted Leimen the privilege to be called "town." When Leimen's population exceeded 20,000 in 1990, the city counclil applied for elevation to a Große Kreisstadt which was subsequently granted by the state government on April 1, 1992.
In 1262, the lords of Bruchsal gave Leimen to the palatine as fiefdom and from 1464 on Leimen definitely belonged to the Palatinate.
Leimen consists of the core town, nowadays called "Leimen (Mitte)", and the four districts Gauangelloch, Lingental, Ochsenbach and Sankt Ilgen.

The town of Leimen is about five miles south of Heidelberg, and is the area's industial center -- providing a significant number of jobs for residents of Leimen, Nußloch, and other area towns (such as St. Ilgen, Sandhausen, Bruchhausen, Walldorf, and Rohrbach).
Despite its 'industrial' roots, Leimen's downtown has maintained a quaintness all its own, with the main street snaking up a steep hillside, away from the factories.
Like most towns, Leimen has its brewery and brauhaus/restaurant, but few display their tanks in a storefront window the way Leimen's does...

I think there were two main waves of this in Baden, just after the 1848/49 revolutions and after the unification of Germany in 1871.
Once Germany was united under Prussia, many from Baden didn't want their sons to go into the German/Prussian army and encouraged them to go abroad to escape conscription.
The corporal of the IV infantry regiment in Constance Johann Ludwig Schneider from Leimen left his garrison without authorisation on the evening of 21st September 1854, and was given six weeks to report or lose his rights and be fined 1200 Gulden.

Owned by the Seligmann family, the court's financial adviser, this building now serves Leimen as a town hall for representation purposes.
It pays to see its impressive Jewish cemetery which, founded in mid-17th century amidst a forest, was used at times by as many as 30 Jewish communites in the vicinity.
