		The first mention of the Roman fort and Romano-British settlement at Leintwardine is given in Ptolemy's Geography of the second century, who calls the town Brannogenium and perhaps mistakenly, assigns the administration of the town to the Ordovices tribe of Mid Wales.
		Modern research conducted on the defenses of several local hillforts suggests that the Leintwardine complex was situated close to the borders between three native British tribes, in a sort of 'no man's land'.
		In addition, about a mile to the south of Leintwardine is the hillfort known as Brandon Camp (SO4072), which was apparently abandoned prior to the Roman occupation of the area and re-used by the Roman military as a storage-depot.

		Leintwardine is a large village and civil parish in north Herefordshire, England, close to the border with Shropshire.
		It is theorised by Herefordshire Historian Duncan Brown that Leintwardine performed the role of trading post and outpost early in the Roman conquest of Britain.
		Graves dug in Leintwardines Church St. Mary Magdalene to a depth of 8ft show a clear level of broken pottery and charcoal.

	Sir Banastre Tarleton
		In 1794 he became a major-general; in 1812 a general; and he held a military command in Ireland and another in England.
		He died without issue at Leintwardine in Shropshire on the 25th of January 1833.
		For some time Tarleton lived with the actress Mary Robinson (Perdita), and his portrait was painted both by Joshua Reynolds and by Thomas Gainsborough.

	BRANDON CAMP
		This Iron-Age hillfort lies about a mile (1.6km) south of Leintwardine village on Brandon Hill, where two ramparts set to the east and south enclose a triangular area of c.
		The excavators recorded that at all locations excavated within the visible defences of the Brandon Camp Roman fort all stratified archaeological deposits above the solid rock had been destroyed by the plough.
		The interior of the hillfort has long been in cultivation and faint crop-marks appear from time to time.

	The Jolly Frog
		Jayne and Martyn Emsen created the Jolly Frog from the former Cottagers’ Comfort pub six years ago and moved on just a few weeks ago to just down the road at Downton-on-the-Rock where they are creating another fine-dining experience.
		It was an award-winning establishment when in the hands of the Emsens and, after my most recent visit, I imagine it will no doubt continue to pick up accolades with the Leedham-Smiths.
		Even from where I live in south Shropshire it is a 20-25 minute drive out to Leintwardine, but believe me it is more than worth the effort.
