The unincorporated village of Leith is located on the eastern shore of the Owen Sound, an inlet on the south shore of Georgian Bay on Lake Huron about 9 km northeast of the city of Owen Sound, Ontario in Canada.
A superior harbour in the city of Owen Sound eventually led to the total demise of Leith as a commercial port.
Leith is the site of the grave of Tom Thompson, a noted Canadian landscape painter who died in mysterious circumstances at Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park in 1917.

John Stewart, from Livingstone, delivered a bottle of the water 'O' Leith and I procured a bottle of water 'O' Leith, Ontario, which we purified with a bottle or two of Glenfiddich, of which everyone had a mouthful and toasted "oor toon", Leith.
The church service was conducted by a retired minister, whose grandparents were from the Leith, Scotland area and was read in the old Scottish Presbyterian doctrine.
After the service a delicious lunch, made by the ladies of Leith, Ontario, was served under a beautiful, old Oak tree, where we were also entertained by fiddlers, singers and dancers, singing old Scottish folk songs.

I was at Leith Academy from 1977-83 (and at the Primary before that).
I checked with my mom to find the dates she attended Leith… She was born in 1926 and attended Leith from about 1932 thru 1942, attending high school there from 1939-1942.
However we believe she was Dux of Leith in 1938 and because war was about to break out, was unable to go to University entering the Civil Service instead.

Comment:  Have many happy memories of Leith and Newhaven.  Both my parents are Leithers.  Now stay in the Liberton area of the city with husband Phil and our son and daughter.
Comment: I went to Dr Bells Primary School (Mr Cossar), and Leith Academy Secondary.  I was a member of the 2nd Leith Boys Brigade.

My Gramp emigrated from Ireland in the teens, landing in New York city, where he became a movie projectionist -- a fascinating job, considering the development of movies from silent to talkies at this time.
Somehow he moved to Hamilton Ontario, and went into partnership with a friend in the retail electrical business, selling lamps and all the electrical gadgets of the time.
With the Depression, this business closed -- people didn't have money for the frills of electrical gadgetry when they were trying to make ends meet on items like rent and food and clothing.

In 1956, gravesite was dug up and a skeleton was discovered in what apparently was his coffin and burial box.
