Leith Hill Tower, a fortified folly, is the highest point in the south east of England - the top of the tower being 317 metres (1,029 ft) above sea level.
Leith Hill summit and tower were given to the National Trust in 1923 by Mr W J MacAndrew.

The best riding is not actually on the North Downs, but centred around the three main hills of the area, Pitch Hill, Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill.
Holmbury Hill, which is good, as some of the older ones (like those previously described on this page) get trashed over time and end up being as wide as firetracks.
Leith Hill is where all the walkers hang out so it can get busy - especially near the Tower where you can get food and tea, with some nice views.

The Leith Hill Festival is more than 100 years old and today there are still many people in and around Dorking who remember those extraordinary occasions when Vaughan Williams was its conductor.
Ralph Vaughan Williams became conductor of the Leith Hill Music Festival in 1905 for the first concert, and continued in this capacity until 1953, so there are still many people in and around Dorking who have sung under his baton.
He is remembered as having a wonderful gift for getting the very best out of singers and players, and possessed that ability to fly into a towering rage when the choir displeased him in some way, and then immediately temper it by telling a pertinent funny story.

Richard Hull of Leith Hill Place built Prospect House, later known as Leith Hill Tower, on the top of Leith Hill in 1765 or 1766, with the intention of raising the hill above 1,000 feet.
When he died in 1772, at his request he was buried under the tower, upside down - and apparently on horseback, according to Puckle - as he believed that on Judgement Day the world would be reversed.

From Leith Hill the only way is down and a very fast descent took us South to the fairly flat lanes around Walliswood.
The afternoon ride was shortened slightly, as the hills and sticky toffe pudding had taken their toll, so the sadistic runs leader chose yet more climbing and a muddy uphill bridleway to reach Leith Hill Tower.
At the bottom of Box Hill disaster struck Ken and Liz again, their rear hub cracked and their ride was cut short as they returned to their motorhome to change the wheel.

Leave the car park on the road and follow the road through Holmbury village, pass the church on the hill and keep going till you come to a T junction going left.
Both routes bring you out at the cricket pitch on the top of the hill.
From the top of deliverance there is a smaller track heading across from where you came in, follow this and it spits you out near some fun dips you can ride.

I had very little to do, thanks to Glen’s expert organisation, Gill’s excellent courses and the Clearys pre-event controlling and it wasn’t until the weekend of the event that I switched from an armchair official to the real thing.
Leith Hill wasn’t chosen for the World Cup Middle race for nothing!
Now (thanks to the new map) the intricate parts can be used, it has become the only area in the South East having level 5 (the highest) technical difficulty and is, in my view, one of the most technically challenging areas in Britain.

 Inspiring views projects - Inspiring views | Surrey Hills AONB
Box Hill, one of the most prominent viewpoints and best known landmarks in the South of England has been made more accessible to people with limited mobility through the Inspiring Views project.
The footpath from the visitor centre to the viewpoint was upgraded to allow wheelchairs and pushchairs to access Salomans’ Memorial with its spectacular views over the weald towards the South Downs.
To interpret the practical work, pupils from Moon Hall School in Holmbury St Mary visited Leith Hill which also involved a visit to the tower.

No route guide in the South East would be complete without a trip to Leith Hill.
Okay it is a bit over hyped and okay it gets busier than the M25 on a Sunny Sunday, but off peak it is a really great ride and this route takes in the best of the area, with a trip up onto the North Downs as well.
Keep going straight on uphill you come out at the car park where you started.
