In a way it is. The houses are part of an Iron Age village near the town of Lejre, 25 miles west of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Here, aided by student volunteers who live and sometimes dress like prehistoric farmers, the Lejre scientists measure everything from the body heat given off by animals stabled indoors to the length of time it takes for a thatched wattle-and-daub house to disintegrate after it has been abandoned.
Nestled between marsh and hill, the houses at Lejre, like their Iron Age counterparts, lie along an east-west axis, with hearth and living quarters at the western end of each and pens for livestock at the eastern end.

Tradition has it that the founder of the tribe Skjold was sent to the land of the Danes by Odin as a baby to unify the divided people.
During this period, the grave monuments and the strikingly placed large buildings made Lejre a landscape expressing power - a royal seat fitting for a royal family reigning during the final centuries of antiquity.

 Lejre Experimental Centre: Burial Mounds
The answer is that they are all very important parts of an extensive and, with time, far-reaching interdisciplinary project concerning Bronze Age burial mounds, conditions of preservation and, not least, the rituals associated with the building of these mounds and the burials within them.
The main thrust of results of the pedological investigations was, therefore, that the environment which led to the exceptional state of preservation should probably be seen in the light of a specially and consciously executed method of mound construction.
This is a project which has arisen from, and incorporates, concrete questions ranging from those concerning pedological processes and particular methods of mound construction to hypotheses of significance for a broader interpretation of Bronze Age religion, social conditions and cosmology.
