It is situated on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Leland River (also known as the Carp River).
Leland is built on the site of one of the oldest and largest Ottawa villages on the Leelanau Peninsula.

LELAND - Michigan's middle school laptop computer initiative has faced its share of skepticism, but Kevin Pershinske sees success as he watches Leland Public School students wind their way through interactive lessons.
Leland's $102,000 grant was part of funding awarded to the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District.
The Leland district's required contribution was $40 per laptop, and it received an additional $20,000 from the state for professional development.

I'm sure I don't remember my first visit because I know my parents took me to Leland shortly after I was born, but I do remember the soda bar, and when the area in the bar where the booths are were an outdoor walkway.
Before returning to Leland four years ago for the first time in eleven, one of the most vivid recollection I had was of sitting on a barstool at 6 or 7 and peering excitedly up over the edge at the man who was to furnish me with my cheeseburger, french fries and chocolate milk.
As we were heading into Leland for dinner on Saturday night, we realized our two year old daughter was coming down with the sniffles and we didn't have any cold medicine.

Not only did college coaches find Shives, so did other high school coaches, who elected her the 24th recipient of the Miss Basketball Award, which was presented Monday at the Free Press.
The award (only seniors are eligible) is sponsored by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan and the Free Press.
Shives became aware of the award when she was a freshman and played against Dansville's Lindsay Bowen, now a junior at Michigan State.
