It is very small and quietand run by the church.
The neighbouring island is called Leleuvia, is a bit more livelier, locals are friendly, there is a dive shop on the island who regulary organise dive and snorkel trips, the food is good and the atmosphere is fantastic.
If you want to be on your own, no problem as you can just use the beach on the other side.

 Leleuvia Island Resort - Fiji. The Backpackers Island

 Fiji in the Fall
Leleuvia was a very small quiet place and because of the coup worries business was slow, so I got a cottage to myself.
We both thought Leleuvia was a great place to retire.
As usual the native people had kava parties at night and invited me to listen to their beautiful music, and they gave me a tape, and many beautiful shells.

We were in a dorm room with three others we didn't know, including one guy, so you had to go get dressed in the bathroom and hoped he wasn't looking up your shorts as you climbed 7 feet up to the top bunk.
In my room I'm listening to island songs from Fiji, pulling at my heartstrings, with songs that were song around the yaqona bowl nights on Leleuvia.
It was fun to see them and catch up on life since Leleuvia.

 Dodging reefs
In actual fact the reef markers are very poorly maintained or in many cases completely missing, the charts are hundreds of meters offset from the GPS readings, and the mud outflows from the rivers on the big island mask the color of the coral reefs, so many are nearly invisible.
Our first night out, we anchored at Leleuvia, a lovely little island with what promised to be wonderful snorkeling.
We arrived late in the afternoon, so Craig and I did a scouting snorkel, seeing a large population of fish and other marine fantasies.

I've made plans to go from Leleuvia to Suva to Beqa and then off to New Zealand.
On the beach at Leleuvia with the mile-plus long sandbar in the background.
One gets the feeling of being able to walk to other islands, of being as miraculous as Jesus and seeming to walk on the surface of the water.

 Ball of Dirt on Ovalau Island, Fiji / Michael Katzko / A phase of relative transcience / untying the knot
Ovalau is an extinct volcano, and you can take a 3 hour long guided hike up from the coast through the jungle (photo 6) to the village of Lovoni (photo 7), encircled by the ancient caldera walls (photo 8).
And, more in keeping with a trip to Fiji, I visit the coral island of Leleuvia, south of Ovalau.
Sunrise at high tide (photo 9) with a view of Ovalau and a couple of smaller intervening islands inside the lagoon,  and low tide exposing the expanse of the shallow lagoon (photo 10).

 Fiji
I didn't stay in Nadi any longer that the time it took me to book onto an Island I had read about called Leleuvia - south of Ovalau- which itself is north east of the main island Viti Levu.
I headed from coast to coast in west to east fashion, to catch a boat to this Leleuvia.
Two dudes on Leleuvia playing and singing for us in the evening..

There is a good scenic coastal road and bus service, while cars and bikes are also available for hire.
There are a few beaches, but the better beaches may be found on neighbouring small islands such as Leleuvia and Caqalai, although the accommodation on these islands is more basic.
There are some great hiking trails on Ovalau, particularly to the central volcanic crater, the village of Lovoni, and several popular waterfalls.

The main centre for tourism in the Lomaiviti Group is Ovalau, but it is mainly known for its ecotourism and colonial history (it used to be the capital of Suva) Only 13 kilometers long and 11 kilometers wide, it is located off the eastern coast of Viti Levu.
Close to Ovalau are the small sandy coral islands of Caqelai and Leleuvia.
They have attractive beaches and you can walk around each island in about 10 minutes.

The people are so friendly and open to talk about God, but it's the willingness to submitt to the Lordship of Jesus and go beyond the token surface of religion and recieve a life changing, born again experience that gives the power to us to spread the truth and freedom of the gospel.
As the boat picked up speed away from the beach I could see the coral beds beneath and my dream of diving on the reefs of Fiji was becoming a reality.

I went snorkelling for the first time yesterday, and it was quite lovely - gorgeous live coral, and lots of pretty fishies - even saw one reef shark, and thankfully none of the tiger sharks we have heard about - scary.
Tomorrow we head to Suva for a night (it is the main "big" city), and then off to Leleuvia for 4 nights - small coral island with only one resort and golden sand beaches (yum!).
At about noon, a taxi came to pick us up to take us to the boat landing in Bau, where we were to catch the boat to Leleuvia Island Resort, managed by a guy named Steve who used to live behind the Chevron in Aptos, right down the road from us (cliché, but, “small world”).

The snorkelling is excellent right off the shore where you'll find plenty of corals and tons of Christmas tree worms.

Leleuvia is a small island surrounded by coral reefs.
There's not a lot to do on Leleuvia apart from lie in a hammock, snorkel and play cards with your fellow islanders, which I did, quite happily, for three days.

We came to Levuka to stop over for a night and then head back to the mainland, but have now been here for nearly a week.
We've been hanging around with Wayne, an English schoolteacher from Milton Keynes and Amelie his French girlfriend who came over from Leleuvia with us.
They're just finishing their round the world trip, so it's been great to hear about some of their experiences.

Fiji (2001)- I spent a short time on Vita Levu, the biggest island, then went to Ovalau, where the traditional Fijian village culture is still very much alive.
From there I went to a tiny coral island called Leleuvia, full of sea snakes, and had a blast snorkelling, drinking kava, lying around in a hammock half the day ans sleeping in a stick hut at night.
France - several times, it's easy when you live in England.
