 | | Lelystad, risen from the seabed of the former Zuiderzee, is the capital of the province of Flevoland. |
 | | In 1957, East Flevoland, where Lelystad was to be built, was reclaimed and in 1966 the first building work began. |
 | | According to the original master plan of 1975, Lelystad was to become a town of some 100,000 inhabitants, and was designated by the government as a centre of urban growth to accommodate people from the Randstad, particularly Amsterdam, who were searching for somewhere to live. |
