The Bujang Valley or Lembah Bujang is a sprawling historical complex and has an area of approximately 224 square km.
Situated near Merbok, Kedah, between Gunung Jerai in the north and Sungai Muda in the south, it is the richest archaeological area in Malaysia.

Lembah Bujang in the state of Kedah witnessed the birth of one of the earliest civilizations in Malaysia.
In the modern Malay language, ‘Bujang’ means bachelor or unmarried, but after reasearching on the subject, I found out that the place’s name was probably derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Bhujanga’, meaning dragon.
During the peak of the civilization, Lembah Bujang was a centre of commerce, luring in traders from as far as China, India and even the Middle East.

But the Bujang Valley had been mentioned in a Tamil poem, "Pattanopolai", as far back as the Second or Third Century A.D. There, the Bujang Valley is called Kalagan, which philologists claim eventually gave rise to the modern-day Kedah.

One of the primary trading centres for this overland trade was a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that flourished from the fourth to the seventh century in the Bujang Valley, just south of the peak of Gunung Jerai (and thus easily located by early Indian mariners).
As was the case with many of Malaysia's greatest trading civilizations, the Bujang Valley kingdom's prosperity made it an attractive target for outsiders.
The region came under the influence of the Sumatran kingdom of Sri Vijaya in the 7th and 8th century, followed by a period during which Kedah was dominated by the Thai states to the north.
