Population Growth of Lemna and Azolla
The objective of this experiment was to analysis the growth of a Lemna population.
Consequently, Lemna will grow as long as it will be limited by the availability of resources or by the competition with other individuals of its own species.
Probably, because Lemna generations overlap in many populations, Lemna should have a growth rate superior to most of the other organisms that are submitted to important environmental resistance (death).

 The Lemnaceae (Duckweed Family)
In Spirodela, Landoltia and Lemna it is a flattened structure with slender, hairlike roots on the underside.
The plant bodies (fronds) of Lemna valdiviana are often connected in clusters of four to seven, and the nerve ("vein") typically extends 3/4 of the distance from the node (point of root attachment) to the apex.
Lemna aequinoctialis is clearly a short-day plant because it requires 16 hours of darkness (8 hours of light) to flower.

Lemna is a genus of free-floating aquatic plants from the duckweed family.
The duckweeds have been classified as a separate family, the Lemnaceae, but some researchers (the AGP II) consider the duckweeds members of the Araceae.

The genus Lemna, that belongs to the Duckweed family, is found throughout all parts of the world.
The species in the genus Lemna are, as the other genera in the Duckweed-family (Lemnaceae), greatly reduced plants, that neither have real leaves nor stem, but the whole plant consists only of a flat body, and as a characteristic for the genus Lemna a single root.
In the genus Lemna there are 14 described species, of these, three are living in the nature in northern Europe.

Blue Light-induced Chloroplast Reorientations in Lemna trisulca L. (Duckweed) are Controlled by Two Separable Cellular ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
In Lemna trisulca and other higher plant species characterized so far, orientational movements of chloroplasts are induced by blue light, and their action spectra suggest a common photoreceptor (flavoprotein), involved in both LFR and HFR induction (6).
This theoretical study indicated that LFR and HFR in Lemna are controlled by two different rate-limiting processes and consequently may involve separate regulatory mechanisms (10).
Further studies with the use of several calcium antagonists have indicated that although the proper regulation of cytosolic calcium homeostasis is indispensable for both LFR and HFR in Lemna, some additional, as yet undefined, factors are required to specify the direction of chloroplast movement (14).

Modeling duckweed growth in wastewater treatment systems
A model or mathematical expression derived from duckweed growth data was used to fit data from experiments conducted in a greenhouse in Lubbock, Texas.
The data used in the above analyses were based on Lemna biomass harvested from the first trough in each series (A, E, I and M Figure 1) that received the wastewater at one of these six concentrations (0, 3.9, 8.9, 13.9, 28.5 and 54.6 mg/litre TN).
The main objective of developing this model was to separate the effects of N, temperature, and solar radiation on the growth and protein content of duckweed.
