The town of Lemont, Illinois, became of importance to Slovenians in 1923, when the Slovenian Franciscan fathers of St. Stephen’s parish in Chicago, bought property there, with the intention of building a monastery.
In an effort to stop the further dicintegration of the Slovenian community, a group, under the lead of Martin Hozjan, began plans to build a Slovenian Cultural Center in Lemont as a place for Slovenians to come together to preserve their heritage and to once again build up a strong Slovenian community.
The land was generously donated by the Franciscan fathers of St. Mary’s Seminary, and thanks to the many volunteers who donated countless hours of their time, the beautiful building was opened with a very special two day celebration on Novemeber 18, 1995.
