A Series of Unfortunate Events - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Series of Unfortunate Events is a children's book series, written by Daniel Handler under the pseudonym of Lemony Snicket, and illustrated by Brett Helquist.
Snicket often talks about Beatrice, the woman he loved (this may be a reference to Beatrice Portinari, who was unrequitedly loved by the Florentine poet Dante Alighieri and appears as a character in two of his works).
Snicket often uses strange and specific similes, in which an event in the story is described as being like a situation that would rarely occur, though Snicket goes into great detail about it, perhaps describing past experiences of his such as described above.

A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS movie review, In Film Australia
Lemony Snicket, the jovially jaded alter ego of thirty four year-old author Daniel Handler, has sold more than twenty seven million copies of his books worldwide, and was the first author to knock the Harry Potter series off the top of the New York Times children's best sellers list.
The visual patterns of the film are intriguingly designed, left-of-norm in a kind of Burtonesque manner: slightly hallucinogenic, slightly impressionist, and the effect is refreshingly off-kilter, especially for a family film.
But A Series of Unfortunate Events is charming in its bleakness, naughty rather than nasty, and still conveys something tangible for the kids that doesn't insult their intelligence, actually giving them credit for having a sophisticated sense of humour able to penetrate the harshness to appreciate the soft centre within.

The film has a strong "Harry Potter" feel, what with the heroic, much put-upon British children, and the fantastical setting.
The film comes with a wonderfully disturbing climax, and a enjoyably happy epilogue that hints at many future misfortunes for the Baudelaire children.

Lemony Snicket is the narrator of a series of unfortunate events that befall the Baudelaire orphans.
It is a film aimed at the young adults who devour the books and strives hard to keep the tone and feel of the film on the same level as the literature it is based on.
The visual style of the film is so other-worldly that even though some of the events in the film are dark, the good spirit of the Baudelaire orphans shines through, brightening the unfortunate events befalling them.

The film opens with the bad, bad news that the Baudelaire children's parents have passed away in a fire.
Also, I felt that this film should have been a 12 for the proper sinister characters and horror momennts of the book to frurish, but to garner it a PG the character of Olaf had to be more camp than psychoticly smart, for which Jim Carrey did well.
That is the only point where the film could have been as entertaining for adults as for children (and I did feel odd going with my wife to a film mainly having young kids as an audience anyway...).

Lemony Snicket has sold out -- and his movie is better for it.
This may not be what fans of ''A Series of Unfortunate Events" want to hear, but it's true: The inevitable Hollywood version of author Daniel Handler's poisoned kiddie-book bonbons inevitably lets a little light into the darkest corners of the Baudelaire orphans' lives.
The rest of ''Snicket" is a dank clockwork pleasure, from its fake-out beginning (as a cheery Claymation film called ''The Happy Elf") to the gorgeous paper cut-out credits that will keep you in the theater to the end.

Recent releases of film tie-ins have been superb, or at the very least pleasing, such as The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, Star Wars: Battlefront and even some of the Harry Potter titles.
Fans of the book and film will probably enjoy this method of relaying the tale, not relying on stills from the film, or crude 3D representations of the action, but instead turning to something far more artistic and appealing.
It's unfortunate that there are so many letdowns within Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events, be it the irritating sound, the dull representations of the characters and the gameplay that really is far too easy to engage the experienced player.

CANOE -- JAM! Movies - Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events Review - An Unfortunate turn
DEAR READER: Author Lemony Snicket warns you off seeing the movie version of his first three books because there are just so many "extremely unpleasant" things to see, horrible things that will happen and "misery and woe" that overtake the lives of the young heroes.
Snicket instead recommends taking in "a documentary about cheese fondue." Astute fans of the Lemony Snicket universe know, of course, that the warning is a ruse and that the unpleasantries are precisely what attracts them.
So it is no surprise that Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events is chockfull of nuts -- not least of which is Jim Carrey playing evil ogre Count Olaf -- as well as such terrifying creatures as a giant snake, man-eating lake leeches and Meryl Streep as an in-law.

But, based as it is on the first three books in the Lemony Snicket series, the movie also suffers from a serious case of "episodism." What I mean is, the same sorts of scenes and situations keep happening over and over again.
Relying on their wits and a bit of luck, the children manage to escape Olaf again and again, only to be shipped off to yet another mysterious "relative." The third time this happens, some of the threads begin to sag in what has been up till then a tautly woven adventure.
