Len is the co-founder of CodeCon along with Bram Cohen, co-author of the Zimmermann-Sassaman key-signing protocol, and was an organizer of the protests following the arrest of Dmitry Sklyarov.
On February 11, 2006, at the fifth CodeCon, Len proposed to returning speaker Meredith L. Patterson during the QandA after her presentation, and they are now engaged.

That said, I hope that making it clear what my policy will be, and what I expect all of you to have as your policies in the 'kidnap Len' situation, the attack becomes less attractive.
I really don't want to be kidnapped, and I don't think I would be unless a) the attacker thought the 'kidnap Len' attack had a high probability of working, or b) wanted me disappeared anyway, in which case I'm just screwed to begin with.
I agree that publicity is the appropriate response to an attempt at this attack.

Len Sassaman proposed to help, was granted access to the system, and abused his privilege to download a list of members, complete with name, surname, E-mail and phone.
Most people were about to give in to Len Sassaman's flmail, but 2 guys drummed up the revolt and in the end there was no payment.

Focusing on the evils that remailer ops may be exposed to cuts the pool of potential ops (until Len is the only one), and convinces the government that remailers are dangerous, because even the folks who build and run them are convinced of that.
We all know that there are societally important uses of remailers, including whistleblowing and protecting kids.
