With the scorching sun beating down, community members and learners from Lenasia took part in the Johannesburg City Parks' project aimed to green and beautify the south of Joburg ahead of the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Aimed at restoring the dignity of greater Lenasia, the project aims to address greening disparities by planting more trees to increase the quality of the environment and ensure that a green legacy remains after 2010.
Trees were planted in Lenasia, Vlakfontein and Lehae to coincide with Arbor Week, which is observed internationally at the beginning of spring to promote awareness for the need to plant and maintain trees.

The floor polish factory was destroyed by an inferno, which swept through the building on the night of November 17, killing the entire night shift — ten female workers and one male supervisor.
Collier said that a trainee inspector had been sent to Lenasia to follow up the complaints, but had returned without doing so because he could not locate the factory.
He added that it would be unfair to pin the blame on the trainee, because a senior inspector should have been assigned to the case.

Johannesburg - A person was allegedly shot in the mouth when police tried to disperse protesters in Lenasia on Tuesday morning, SABC reported.
Police spokesperson Captain John Shiburi said he could not confirm the shooting, but police were closely monitoring the situation in the mainly Indian suburb south of Johannesburg.
He said police arrested two residents of Thembelihle, an informal settlement next to Lenasia, where squatters barricaded streets and threw stones at passing cars earlier on Tuesday.

A week after the fire, several hundred workers from factories in Lenasia gathered outside the charred remains of the ESS Chem factory, to lay wreaths in memory of the 11 and to vow that such tragedies must never happen again.
It says a lot about the state of affairs at workplaces in Lenasia that these workers asked not to be identified for fear of losing their jobs.

Police are investigating a possible link between the gruesome gang rape in Lenasia of two domestic workers - one of whom was killed - with the murder two weeks ago of four-year-old Makgabo Matlala and the rape of her nanny.
The domestic worker who survived the rape attack may be asked to attend this week's planned identity parade for the three suspects in the murder of Makgabo, who is Transvaal Judge President Bernard Ngoepe's granddaughter.

Men, women and children ran for cover as violence erupted in Lenasia on Tuesday morning after police opened fire with rubber bullets.
The R554 highway to Lenasia, which had been closed off in protest by about 4 000 residents over the removal of Tembelihle informal settlement residents to Vlakfontein, was strewn with odd shoes, clothes and knobkerries after police started firing rubber bullets.
The Johannesburg council wants to move the residents from the area because they say there is dolomite in the area, but residents say that Vlakfontein, where they are supposed to be moved, lacks infrastructure such as schools and transport facilities.

 Star: Lenasia man questioned in Leigh murder case
A Lenasia South mechanic has been questioned about his possible links to the Leigh Matthews kidnapping and murder case - but police maintain there has still been no breakthrough in the case.
Imraan Sallie, who works and lives on a plot in the area, said investigating officer Superintendent Piet Byleveld and a colleague took him in for questioning on Monday and interrogated him for three hours.
He has been working in the (Lenasia) area and from time to time he will pick up people and question them.
