In the southern province of La Paz, two Lenca Indian campesinos involved in an occupation of contested lands were killed in a dawn attack by presumed hired gunmen of a local landlord.
The two Lenca Indians killed at La Paz, Fabian Gonzalez and Santos Carrillo, were part of a land occupation led by the National Center of Rural Workers (CNTC), one of the largest campesino unions in Honduras.

  Association for a more Just Society - Montaña Verde
The Lenca Indians of Montaña Verde, a large area of mountainous land straddling several districts in the southeastern part of the country, have a moral and legal right to their ancestral lands.
In March of 2001, the Lencas, led by their representative organization COPINH, successfully pressured the government to grant them title to 1792 hectares of land (outside the protected area) in Montaña Verde.
The landowners, say the Lenca, have used local law enforcement officials to harass them-police have invaded the community violently in the night, threatening even children and then arresting community leaders, who were tortured and held without trial.

The Lenca were one of the most numerous indigenous peoples at the time of the arrival of the Spanish and the ones most representative of the national identity.
Guajiquiro, whose name in the Lenca language is said to mean Water Basket or Container, is one of the two Lenca towns (the other is Yamaranguila in the department of Intibucá) which have best preserved many of the traditions of their past.
The Lenca language died out around 1925, but in the communities of Guajiquiro municipality especially, many of the customs of their Lenca ancestors are still practiced, much in private, although now inextricably mixed with catholic rites.
