  Forde Inquiry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Forde Inquiry is the informal title of a lengthy report presented to the government of Queensland, Australia in May 1999.
The commission of inquiry consisted of Jane Thomason, Hans Heilperm and Leneen Forde, the latter serving as chairperson.
Forde was the former Governor of Queensland, her actions and deliberations on behalf of this commission carried great weight with the present Queensland government.

LENEEN FORDE: They were treating children as if they had a medical condition, that if children were troubled and not conforming, that they must have some sort of illness, mental illness or something, and were treated accordingly.

LENEEN FORDE: It's very important for the people, I think, that did suffer damage in their youth in these institutions, to have someone say that they're sorry and to try and understand how it happened and make some sort of reparation for it.

Leneen Forde began her career as a Medical Laboratory Technician in Ontario, Canada, upon receipt of a Diploma of Medical Technology in 1953.
In 1992, Leneen Forde was appointed Governor of Queensland, a position she held until 1997.
At present, Leneen is a member of the National Committee on Human Rights Education, she is the Vice Chair of the National Executive Defence Reserves Support Council and is also the Chancellor of Griffith University.

Some of them were put into corrective institutions because they might've been a little bit wild in their youth; some of the girls particularly were running away from abusive situations in their own home and really shouldn't have been in - locked up for it, but they were sort of blamed as being uncontrollable.

Mr Greenwood was a legal representative at the Forde Inquiry that also investigated an incident at the centre in which a 15-year-old girl was handcuffed to a tennis court fence overnight.
Head of the inquiry former governor Ms Leneen Forde declined to comment on the handcuffing incident or the inquiry.
The Forde Report also rejected a claim by the then-manager of JOYC that he had ordered the handcuffing of the girl, from his home telephone, because he was concerned the girl and another resident might incite a riot.

This was an inquiry that was born of necessity and in considerable controversy.
The harrowing stories recounted in the Forde report should concern this chamber greatly, because the child abuse occurred against children under the guardianship of the state and the church.

Former Queensland Governor Leneen Forde has had a whirlwind relationship with The Brisbane Institute, and she is enjoying it.
Since then, Ms Forde has tried to cut back on her public roles, despite numerous invitations, and only involves herself in those things in which she has a particular interest, that she especially enjoys, or to which she feels she can make a genuine contribution.
As for the Institute, Ms Forde believes interest and awareness in it is a long way from peaking, and that some people, like the friend who invited her to the Sydney Institute, are still to get around to joining.

A PROMINENT Sydney QC and a Queensland senator have called for a Royal Commission to examine the conduct and findings of the recent Forde Inquiry into the abuse of children in Queensland institutions.
Chair of the 1999 inquiry Ms Leneen Forde declined to comment on the inquiry.
She said it was "inappropriate" for her to comment without speaking to Ms Forde.

The inquiry, by a former Queensland Governor, Mrs Leneen Forde, into child abuse in 150 State institutions found evidence of widespread abuse, including sexual molestation, solitary confinement, incarceration in psychiatric facilities, withholding food, and beatings with whips.
The report said responsibility should be shared by successive governments, which had "not sufficiently valued children", churches which had "turned a blind eye", and a society which "ignored or accepted what happened".
Mrs Forde said she was "sure" similar problems would be found in other States.
