Length of stay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Length of stay (LOS) is a term commonly used to measure the duration of a single episode of hospitalization.
Inpatient days are calculated by subtracting day of admission from day of discharge, so persons entering and leaving a hospital on the same day have a length of stay of zero.
A popular statistic associated with length of stay is the average length of stay (ALOS), calculated by dividing the sum of inpatient days by the number of patients admitted with the same DRG classification.

 Length of Stay Analysis
Trimming methodology was used to remove outlier length of stay values from the study population.
If the length of stay on a particular record was less than the lower trim point or in excess of the upper trim point, that record was removed from the database, and thus, from subsequent analyses.
Length of stay values may vary within a DRG category due to variance in ASG, cancer status, and age data.

Tools of the Trade - Average Length of Stay in Hospitals
The average length of stay in hospitals is a statistical calculation often used for health planning purposes.
Because of the different data items used to calculate average length of stay in the two methods, it is important to note that there may be significantly different results depending on the type of facility for which average length of stay is being calculated.
Because of this, Method 2 for calculating average length of stay is often used and is reasonably accurate for all facilities except those hospitals with a large proportion of long stay patients.

Impact of postpartum hospital-stay legislation on newborn length of stay, readmission, and mortality in California.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The objectives of this study were to examine the impact of postpartum hospital-stay legislation on newborns' length of stay, neonatal readmissions, and 1-year mortality in California, and whether this legislation had differential impacts by demographics and complications during delivery or pregnancy.
Length of stay increased by 9.5, 12, and 14 hours in years 1, 2, and 3, respectively, after the passage of the law.
Postpartum length of stay legislation was associated with increased length of stay among all births in California, with significant variation in the law's impact across demographic groups.

Length of Stay - TYC Annual Report 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Based on the crimes they have committed, youths placed in the care of the Texas Youth Commission are assigned minimum lengths of stay, which are the minimum amounts of time they must spend in residential programs before they may be considered eligible for parole.
In addition to the minimum lengths of stay, youths are also required to demonstrate successful performance in the Resocialization program, which outlines their treatment objectives.
The primary reason some youths stay longer than their minimum lengths of stay is because of continued behavior problems while in institutions, such as aggressive and disruptive actions, violating the rights of others, and breaking the rules that are in place to maintain safe and effective therapeutic facilities.

 3. Length of Stay - NRGPS Abstract
Among the wide variety of data was information about the length of time practitioners had spent in their current principal practice, and the length of time they intended to stay in that practice.
Longer length of stay was not necessarily related to higher levels of satisfaction with the current practice, but was reliant on characteristics such as: position in the family life cycle; career ambitions; and practice history.
Length of stay was related to the correlation between practice characteristics and characteristics of the practitioners and their families.

The objective of this paper is to identify a possible relation between the evolutive phase of the appendicitis, age of the patient and hospital length of stay.
The analysis of the mean age and mean lenght of stay in the hospital was: 27.9 years and 3.7 days for the catarrhal type, 28.4 years and 3.9 days for phlegmonous type, 30.1 years and 5 days for the supurative type and 35 years and 5.2 days for the gangrenous type.
There was statistical significance between the evolution phase of the appendicitis and the hospital length of stay (p=0.01) and between age and evolution of the appendicitis (p=0.01).

Neonatal Circumcision: Associated Factors and Length of Hospital Stay
Circumcised infants stayed in the hospital an average of one fourth of a day longer than did those who were not circumcised (mean difference, 0.26 days; 95% confidence interval, 0.16 to 0.36).
Length of stay was examined using a t test for difference of means, chi-square for the association of circumcision with short vs long stays, and stepwise multiple regression to discern the independent effect of circumcision on length of hospital stay.
The association of circumcision with length of stay, independent of the variables which were shown to predict circumcision itself, was determined by regressing the natural log of infant length of stay on circumcision and the variables from the logistic model.

Hospital volume, length of stay, and readmission rates in high-risk surgery
We used regression techniques to examine the relationship between length of stay, 30-day readmission, and hospital volume, adjusting for age, gender, race, comorbidity score, admission acuity, and mean social security income.
There was no consistent relationship between volume and mean length of stay; it significantly increased across volume strata for 7 of the 14 procedures and significantly decreased across volume strata for the other 7.
Of these, the mean length of stay was shorter in high-volume hospitals for 3 procedures (pancreatic resection, esophagectomy, cystectomy), but longer for other procedures (aortic and mitral valve replacement, gastrectomy).
