All it took was hearing Lennie Gallant once.
Everything on Breakwater is a Gallant original, with the exception of one song, "Raise the Dead of Wintertime," by Allan Rankin.
Gallant doesn't just write and sing good songs, he ties his lyrics to people and place in a way that makes you feel like you lived those moments with him.

On the final unreleased track, "Pieces of You," Gallant tones down the tempo and shows his sensitive side as he retells a story told to him on an airplane by a heartbroken passenger who could not stop seeing reminders of the woman who left.
In "Destination," penned while on a cross-country train ride, Gallant uses a bodhran to recreate the rhythm of the train, because he was not allowed to play his guitar onboard.
There is not a lot of banter from Gallant on this record, but his unique blend of folk, rock and pop is so engaging that you hardly notice.

We packed up the tent and moved our digs to the delightful B and B headquarters of the Paintbox Lodge which was housing several performers and stage crew for the weekend.
We did a soundcheck on stage in the afternoon with Lennie Gallant and his band which allowed us to fine-tune the system.
I hadn't seen Lennie Gallant for a couple of years and his ensemble has changed, most noteably by the absense of fiddler Janet Munson but her shoes were filled by Chris Church who duplicated her licks on many of Lennie's older songs.

Gallant is also not afraid to spread his wings outside the usual hummer and strummer box.
He put together a show with the 42 musicians of Symphony Nova Scotia last month, and was part of the East Coast leg of the Bluebird North tour that saw him sharing the stage with Shari Ulrich, Russell DeCarle, and Stephen Fearing.
That comes, he has said, "When you really feel locked in with the often elusive ability to convey a story or an emotion in a unique yet, hopefully, a universal way." He hits that mark more often than not, with over 200 songs to his credit.

Singer/songwriter Lennie Gallant played a set that included classics like "Peter's Dream" alongside his newest masterpiece, "Pieces of You." It was a great, if short, performance.
The prize for roots/ traditional solo artist, for example, went to Lennie Gallant, who hasn't performed in a traditional band in decades.
Gallant was classy enough to point this out in his speech, and to suggest the award really should have gone to fiddler Buddy MacMaster.
