  The Lennie Tristano Experience
Lennie Tristano is one of those who have not yet received their critical due.
Tristano's written lines were a great deal more involved than the already complex melodies typical of bebop; he subdivided and multiplied the beat in odd groupings, and his harmonies did not always behave in a manner consistent with functional tonality.
Tristano's bassists and drummers were not expected to interact in the manner of a bop rhythm section, but to support the music's melodic and harmonic substance.

Lennie Tristano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leonard Joseph Tristano (1919 - 1978) was a jazz pianist and composer.
Tristano was blind from infancy and studied piano and music theory from pre-teen years.
Tristano's mimicking of a jazz bassist's accompaniment with his left hand on these recordings is distinctive and often imitated; the combination of this line with the dazzling line-spinning of his right hand also gives the music a contrapuntal flavour explicitly paying homage to Bach.

Tristano recorded two tracks for his own Jazz label '51 with Ind and Roy Haynes, doing some overdubbing, some of which was speeded up in the mastering; nobody noticed at the time.

BBC - Radio 3 Jazz Profiles - Lennie Tristano
While he was studying for his music degree in Chicago in the early 1940s, he had already begun playing and working with a circle of musicians who became his pupils - including saxophonist Lee Konitz and guitarist Billy Bauer.
Tristano mastered the bebop style, playing both intricate runs and sustained chordal passages, and by the late 1940s was working in New York, where he made some significant discs with the musicians who had developed bebop - notably Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
In the early 1950s, Tristano opened his own jazz school, and for the rest of his life he focussed on teaching rather than playing.

Encouraged by his mother, Tristano learned piano and various reed instruments while still a very small child, despite steadily deteriorating eyesight (he was born during a measles epidemic).
Among the lessons Tristano imparted to his pupils were those of strict precision in ensemble playing, complete command of the instrument and the ability to play complex shifts of time signature within a piece.
Clearly, Tristano was a powerful influence upon the many musicians he taught and through them upon countless more, especially through the work of such pupils as Peter Ind and Konitz, himself an important teacher.

This two-LP set reissues the complete contents of pianist Lennie Tristano's two Atlantic studio albums which were originally titled Lennie Tristano and The New Tristano.
The first album was considered very controversial for on four selections Tristano overdubbed several pianos and altered the tape, speeding up and slowing down the individual tracks.
The remainder of the first album matches Tristano with altoist Lee Konitz, bassist Gene Ramey, and drummer Art Taylor and, although more conventional, are quite individual; the quartet takes apart and evaluates five standards.

The History of Jazz Music. Lennie Tristano: biography, discography, review, links
Chicago's blind pianist Lennie Tristano (1919), of Italian-American descent, who arrived in New York in 1946, fused bebop and 20th-century classical music in his abstract meditations that wove extended melodies over subdued rhythms, the musical equivalent of a renaissance painting with a complex building in the foreground and a simple, pastoral landscape in the background.
Tristano coined that language in 1947, via a series of uncompromising recordings both solo (Atonement in may 1947, Spontaneous Combustion in september 1947) and in a drum-less trio with a guitarist (Billy Bauer) and a bassist (Dissonance, Parallel, Apellation, Abstraction, Palimpsest, Freedom in december 1947).
The dynamic of his compositions was often cyclic, alternating quiet passages and stormy passages, hinting at an endless cycle of rebirths.
