Lennoaceae are a small family of non-photosynthetic root parasites consisting of four species distributed among two genera: Lennoa, centered in Mexico, and Pholisma, which is found in the Sonoran desert of the southwestern United States and Mexico.
This gene is known to be present in all holoparasitic lineages tested to date and is a good candidate for reconstructing the phylogenetic relationships of this family.
Preliminary data clearly eliminate Verbenaceae as the closest related family and suggest that Lennoaceae are most closely related to the genus Ehretia of the subfamily Ehretioideae of Boraginaceae.

Smith, R. Alan*, Diane M. Ferguson, Todd J. Barkman, and Claude W. dePamphilis.
Lennoaceae are a small family of root parasites endemic to Mexico and the southwestern United States.
Earlier studies of Lennoaceae based on floral and pollen morphology have suggested relationships with Boraginaceae, "Hydrophyllaceae," or Verbenaceae.
Preliminary results indicate that a monophyletic Lennoaceae is most closely related to Ehretioideae, a subfamily of Boraginaceae.

are the sistergroup of a clade formed by Hydrophyllaceae s.str., Cordiaceae, Ehretiaceae, Heliotropiaceae, and Lennoaceae.
The last four taxa constitute a monophyletic group, which is the sistergroup of Hydrophyllaceae s.str.
Parasitic Lennoaceae are probably closely allied to Ehretiaceae.
