  Drummerworld: Alan White
White passed through the lineups of a lot of short-lived late-'60s outfits including Ginger Baker's Airforce (playing some keyboards there as well), where he was in the unfortunate position of working alongside legendary drummer Phil Seaman, who managed to eclipse his younger colleague at every turn.
For the most part, however, White became the bedrock of the group's sound during the turbulent late-'70s era, when Yes was struggling with membership changes and the end of the progressive rock boom, which reduced their sales and audience.
Indeed, it was White's breaking his ankle (at a roller-disco, no less) in late 1979 that precipitated the momentary end of the band that year, amid a disastrous attempt at recording a new album.

 Drummerworld: Lenny White
A versatile drummer, Lenny White is still best-known for being part of Chick Corea's Return To Forever in the 1970's.
White was self-taught on drums and he largely started his career on top, playing regularly with Jackie McLean (1968) and recording "Bitches Brew" with Miles Davis in 1969.
White was soon working with some of the who's who of jazz including Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Gato Barbieri, Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke and Stan Getz among others.

Lenny White : Best of Friends - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
No one mistook Lenny White for a bop purist in the 1970s, when the drummer was famous for his work with Chick Corea's influential fusion outfit Return to Forever.
White's work with Return to Forever earned him a reputation as a fusion instrumentalist, and his first recordings as a leader were equally fusion-oriented.
With White on drums, various Twennynine members handle the lead vocals on tracks that range from the goofy funk smoker "Peanut Butter" (a major hit) to sleek, sophisticated R&B offerings like "Betta," "Oh, Sylvie," and the lovely "Morning Sunrise." The album's only fusion instrumental is "Tropical Nights"; otherwise, this is very much an R&B album.

Given the divergent opinions in both jazz and rock about fusion, it's not surprising to learn that Clarke and White are reluctant to fully endorse that classification for this project.

I regard Lenny White's Present Tense as one of the best fusion recordings of the '90s, so I had high hopes for this one.
White continues to fuse jazz, hip-hop, and R&B more effectively than most artists in contemporary jazz.
White often reinterprets a classic pop song in an electric-jazz context, and here he enlists Dianne Reeves to sing “It was a Very Good Year.” This version of the Sinatra classic is OK, but it's less successful than the great rendition of “Walk on By” that appeared on White's Renderers of Spirit (1996).

A long line formed in the hallway outside of the David Friend Recital Hall last month as students and faculty alike gathered to witness a clinic featuring bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Lenny White, the pair that provided the pulse to jazz-fusion supergroup Return to Forever.
The event began with a 10-minute-plus improvisation, as Clarke and White fluidly changed keys and tempos quickly.
When they finished jamming, Clarke and White fielded questions from the audience and spoke fondly about the origins of their friendship, which included stints playing with greats Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, and Joe Henderson, before they both settled into Chick Corea's Return to Forever.
