Lenzing is a small town of approximately 5000 residents, three kilometers north of Lake Attersee in Austria, It is located in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut.
In November 1944, the first transport of 500 women from Auschwitz came to Lenzing to work in the newly opened local subcamp of Mauthausen concentration camp.
Lenzing's economy today is partly based on tourism, but the town is much more known as an industrial site; it is the world headquarters of Lenzing AG, which is the world leader in the production of cellulose-based fiber such as viscose and Lyocell.

Lenzing filed its legal action with the Regional Court Frankfurt against Zimmer AG, as well as against Alceru Schwarza GmbH, a subsidiary of Zimmer AG, for infringement of the German part of a European patent it owns.
The patent EP 0 584 318 relates to cooling of the moulded cellulose by exposure to a gas stream immediately after moulding and is one of the core items of the so-called "Lyocell" technology.
Lenzing says that it is of the opinion that it is impossible to apply the Lyocell process without infringing one of its patents, especially the patent at the heart of this legal action.

On 5th April 2005, the Austrian Competition Court (Kartellgericht) cleared the acquisition of Tencel (UK) by Lenzing (Austria) the world’s largest producer of viscose fibres subject to undertakings.
Lenzing and Tencel are both globally active suppliers of Lyocell, a special viscosic fibre.
After Lenzing agreed in February with the Austrian competition authorities to maintaining production of the Lyocell fibre at Heiligenkreuz in Austria as well as maintaining research activities at Lenzing (also in Austria) for at least six years, Lenzing announced on the 13 April 2005 that the Austrian Competition Authorities’ concerns were now alleviated.

 Courtaulds nears pact over 'wonder fibre'
CHEMICALS group Courtaulds yesterday revealed that it is in the final stage of negotiations with Austrian group Lenzing to settle a long-running dispute over the patents to Tencel, the "wonder fibre" that has the look and strength of cotton but the feel of silk.
The dispute has been running since 1993 when Lenzing claimed that Courtaulds had infringed a patent relating to the spinning process used in producing the fibre, which is derived from wood pulp.
Lenzing said the decision by the Federal Court of Appeal "accentuates the importance of the Lenzing patent and highlights our contribution to the commercialisation of the lyocell process."

The Higher Regional Court Vienna, in its function as anti-trust authority, is reported to have ruled last week that the acquisition gives Lenzing a worldwide monopoly on the production of lyocell, though it has yet to inform the company, which points out that the ruling is not final and it will appeal the decision.
Lenzing, acquired it from investment group CVC Capital's subsidiary Corsadi on 4 May 2004.
